sharing that i'm working with @Reuters' US elections team as an election research associate this fall to 1) brag and 2) request people stop sending education pitches to my Reuters email because that's not my job right now! xoxo from times square
An important @tylerkingkade with some terrific visuals from the @NBCNews Data / Graphics team (check out the @JZarracina intro!), and a first-of-its-kind analysis into what students actually watch when they watch YouTube in school. #dataViz [no paywall]

This proposed plan is absolutely unacceptable.
Here’s what the plan actually does: 36 holes of public golf cut to 18. No more mini golf. No more park. More running / cycling road. No more playground. No more introductory course. Nobody has said a word about the Cherry blossoms.
Who is this actually for? Not the kid learning to golf. Not the family in a walk. Not the birders.
This was never about the public. It’s for the elitists who want a private showcase, and one man’s ego.
New reporting reveals that the DA in the Cornell 7 case straight up lied about Jane Doe’s statement to campus police. He defended his decision not to bring charges by claiming she described all activities on the night in question as “voluntary, conscious, and consensual”.
That made no sense in the first place, because who gives a statement to police about fully a consensual encounter?
According to new reporting, she told campus police “I can say with 100% confidence I was raped” and that during the assault, she “was being hit at the same time. Physically hit very, very hard."

If you haven't read the story The New York Times published in 2002 detailing the final communications from people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11, it is one of the most sobering accounts of the day.
Here's @AMowreader for @NBCNews with a thorough piece on international student enrollment in the U.S., and why U.S. higher education expects a significant drop in the number of international students: [paywall]
Initial government data shows this fall will be a tough one for international student enrollment. 50,000 fewer international students held an active SEVIS status in August, compared to the year prior

Canada added tariffs to several hundred U.S. imports, those tariffs went into effect today. These are three of the Canadian imports the U.S. imposed tariffs on last month, part of this @amowreader report on the raging trade war. [paywall] https://t.co/HXBIhmTabp
Big shoutout to @amowreader, who just finished her internship on the Data / Graphics team at NBC News.
She'll be on the job market come January and if you're looking for a data journalist who can report, write, visualize, analyze and pitch like a pro, give Ashley a holler.

We took a deep dive into what is (and isn't) happening with Social Security's retirement benefits, why we are in the place we're in (demographics, mostly) and how it all could play out. Reporting, visuals and words by @amowreader for @NBCNews [paywall] https://t.co/eTx6CaymOa
