An Open Letter to the Beautiful People of Jamaica 🇯🇲
Hurricane Melissa came with the force of fear winds meant to break, waters meant to drown but instead, it revealed something unshakable: the spirit of Jamaica.
You danced in the rain.
You sang through your pain.
You held each other when the world went quiet.
What was meant to destroy has only strengthened your unity, your laughter, your love.
I came here with a mission to help to show up, to pour into the culture, to give but what I received in return was far greater. Your warmth, your hugs, your grace have changed me forever. My heart will never be the same.
You’ve reminded me what faith in motion looks like.
You’ve reminded me that prayer is power.
And you’ve proven that resilience isn’t about avoiding the storm… it’s about dancing through it.
Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.”
Even in flood and fire, God’s promise stands He walks beside you, unshaken.
2 Corinthians 4:8–9 (NIV)
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
You may bend, but you will never break. The spirit of Jamaica cannot be destroyed.
To every mother, father, child, and elder — your courage is the sermon. Your strength is the miracle. Your joy is the lesson.
We see you. We love you. We stand with you.
And through it all, we will make sure the world never forgets.
With love and gratitude,
Tyrese Gibson 🤍🇯🇲

“My name is Chef Mathieu, and together with World Central Kitchen, we are preparing to face the difficult days ahead…”
Since sharing that message on Sunday, Canadian Chef Mathieu Masson-Duceppe has confirmed to the Jamaica Observer that more than 65 volunteers — including chefs, cooks and helpers — have already joined the effort. A GoFundMe has also been launched and has so far raised US$1,105 to help feed communities expected to be hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa.
The team’s mission is simple: prepare thousands of warm meals for families who may lose access to food and supplies. They’re still accepting more cooks, dishwashers, and donations — because as Chef Mathieu says, “Any help is good help.”
Chef Duceppe was the Chopped Canada Season 2 winner and executive chef of Montreal restaurants Jellyfish Crudo et Charbon and the Pubjelly.
