JUST IN: Namibiaโs annual inflation rate rose to 3.1% in April 2026, up from 2.1% in March, largely driven by sharp increases in fuel and transport costs, according to a new consumer price index (CPI) review by First National Bank of Namibia economists.
The report states that headline inflation accelerated mainly because of higher transport costs following recent fuel price hikes, with petrol prices increasing by N$2.50 per litre and diesel by N$4.00.
Transport inflation rebounded strongly to 5.0% year-on-year in April, compared to a contraction of 1.7% in March. On a monthly basis, the operation of personal transport equipment jumped to 9.4%, up from 0.5% previously.
The economists warned that inflationary pressure is likely to intensify further after additional fuel increases announced for May, which will see petrol rise by another N$1.40 and diesel by N$4.63. Taxi fares increased from N$13 to N$15 earlier this month.
Despite the rise in headline inflation, core inflation - which excludes volatile items such as food and energy - eased slightly to 2.8% in April from 2.9% in March.
The FNB economists said this suggests that cost-push pressures rather than demand-driven factors are now becoming the main driver of inflation.
