Following Anthrax Outbreak in #Kyotera Uganda. What do we need to know???
DEFINITION‼️
A serious infectious disease caused by spore-forming bacteria called Bacillus anthracis. It’s zoonotic simply meaning that it’s transmissible from animals to humans. Humans can catch the disease from infected animals or thru contaminated animal products.

FORMS OF ANTHRAX‼️
1. Cutaneous/skin.
Most common form & usually contracted when someone with a break in their skin comes into direct contact with anthrax spores. Black sore is most common presentation.
2. Gastro-Intestinal
Eating meat from an infected animal.
Normally presents as severe food poisoning.
3. Inhalation/Pulmonary.
Rare but most severe form. Initial symptoms are flue-like however can quickly worsen to breathing complications.

MANAGEMENT‼️
1. Patients respond well to antibiotics however all cases need Hospitalization.
2. Early detection of outbreaks, quarantine of affected premises, destruction of diseased animals & formites.
3. Implementation of appropriate sanitary procedures to ensure safety of products of animal origin intended for human consumption is key.
