Egypt’s acquisition of the CH-47F Chinook strengthens one of the most important but often overlooked military capabilities: heavy tactical airlift.

The CH-47F can carry 33 troops, lift external loads of up to 26,000 lb (11.8 tonnes) and cruise at around 160 knots. Its digital cockpit, advanced flight-control system and tandem-rotor configuration also support operations in difficult terrain and reduced-visibility conditions.

For Egypt, the advantage is flexibility. The Chinook can rapidly move troops, artillery, vehicles, ammunition and engineering equipment between dispersed operating areas without depending on runways.

It is particularly useful for operations across the Sinai, Western Desert and Red Sea region, while also supporting special operations, medical evacuation and disaster-relief missions.

Most importantly, Egypt already has decades of experience operating Chinooks. Moving to the CH-47F therefore modernizes an established capability rather than introducing an entirely new helicopter ecosystem.

For Egypt, the CH-47F is less about adding another aircraft and more about improving how quickly heavy forces and supplies can be moved where they are needed.
