° Deputy Secretary General for Multilateral Affairs, Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faisal Bin Muhammad, chaired the first session of the National Human Rights Action Committee Meeting for 2026 (1/2026) on 9 June 2026 in Putrajaya.

° The meeting brought together around 100 representatives from various Federal Ministries and Agencies and State Representatives from Sabah and Sarawak as well as the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM), civil society organisations (CSOs) and academia. Among the CSOs and academia that participated in the meeting include, Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (CENTHRA), Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations (MACSA), Pusat Komas, Family Frontiers, House of Wisdom, Human Trafficking Watch, Justice for Sisters, Asylum Access Malaysia, Malaysian Bar and National University of Malaysia (UKM).

° This periodic meeting serves as a strategic platform to discuss human rights issues raised at the United Nations (UN) concerning Malaysia, while strengthening cooperation among various stakeholders in promoting and protecting human rights in line with the country’s international commitments.

° The National Human Rights Action Committee was established by the Cabinet in May 2024 as a mechanism to monitor and coordinate the implementation of Malaysia’s commitments under the Fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Session of the UN Human Rights Council.

° Secretary General and ASEAN SOM Leader for Malaysia, Tan Sri Amran Mohamed Zin, led the Malaysian delegation to the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting which took place in Manila, the Philippines on 8 June 2026.

° The meeting discussed matters of importance to ASEAN, including follow up actions on decisions made by ASEAN Leaders’ decision at the 48th ASEAN Summit, preparations for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, ASEAN’s relations with external partners, as well as preparations for the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to be held in July 2026.

° Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan led the Malaysian delegation to the 17th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) between Malaysia and the Republic of Indonesia, held in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia on 4 June 2026.

° The meeting was co-chaired by the Foreign Minister and the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia, and serves as the principal bilateral mechanism between both countries to review, coordinate and advance cooperation across political and security, trade and economic, and socio-cultural matters.

° The 17th JCBC also serves as the substantive preparation towards the 14th Annual Consultation, which Malaysia will host in August 2026, reaffirming both countries’ shared commitment to deepening a stable, forward-looking and mutually beneficial bilateral relationship.

° The Malaysian delegation was led by  Secretary General, Tan Sri Amran Mohamed Zin, accompanied by officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant Ministries and Agencies.

° The SOM coordinated positions and finalised the substantive preparations for the Ministerial Meeting to be co-chaired by the Foreign Ministers of both countries on 4 June 2026, in line with the JCBC’s role as the principal bilateral mechanism for advancing cooperation across political and security, trade and economic, and socio-cultural matters.

° Secretary General  and the ASEAN SOM Leader of Malaysia, Tan Sri Amran Mohamed Zin led the Malaysian delegation to the 38th ASEAN-United States Dialogue held on 3 June 2026 at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, Indonesia.

° The Dialogue reviewed progress and the future direction of the ASEAN-United States Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with discussions centred on building a Stronger, Safer and More Prosperous partnership framework between ASEAN and the United States. The Dialogue reaffirmed ASEAN Centrality while navigating complex Indo-Pacific geopolitical risks.

° Malaysia contributed to discussions on maritime and regional security, people-to-people ties through programmes such as YSEALI and the Fulbright United States-ASEAN Visiting Scholar Programme, and economic cooperation encompassing the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, resilient supply chains, and clean energy transition, including support for the ASEAN Power Grid.

° The Dialogue further exchanged views on the latest regional and international developments, including the South China Sea, the situation in the Middle East, Palestine and the importance of holding international law based on UN Charter, international humanitarian law and UN resolutions.
