Zimbabwe Pushes Export-Led Growth and Value Addition at 2026 Exporters’ Conference
Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its commitment to an export-led growth model anchored on value addition, industrialisation, and global competitiveness under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2). Speaking at the 2026 ZimTrade Annual Exporters’ Conference, President Emmerson Mnangagwa emphasised that export-oriented production is no longer just a business strategy, but a national economic imperative aimed at increasing foreign currency earnings and strengthening economic resilience.
The Government is prioritising the transition from raw exports to processed and value-added products across key sectors such as mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and forestry. In particular, the focus is on downstream beneficiation, local processing of minerals, expansion of tobacco products beyond raw leaf, revitalisation of the cotton-to-clothing value chain, and growth in horticulture and livestock exports. This approach seeks to retain more value domestically while creating jobs and industrial opportunities.
To support exporters, authorities are implementing reforms to simplify trade processes, modernise border systems, and reduce the cost of doing business. Initiatives such as the Zimbabwe Electronic Single Window platform, infrastructure upgrades along trade corridors, and logistics reforms are designed to enhance export efficiency and market access.
Zimbabwe is also leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to integrate local enterprises, particularly SMEs, into regional and global value chains. The strategy places strong emphasis on inclusive growth, with youth, women, cooperatives, and rural producers expected to play a greater role in export development.
Overall, the conference underscored the country’s ambition to build a diversified, value-added export economy driven by innovation, digital trade, and competitive “Made in Zimbabwe” products for regional and international markets.
