They Want a New Constitution
OPINION | Harlan Vale
The Democratic Socialists of America just put it in writing. Their 2026 national program says they are fighting "to win the battle for democracy, draft a new constitution, and create a democratic socialist republic."
That's not a platform tweak. That's a replacement plan.
They want to abolish the Senate. Abolish the Electoral College. Replace the President and the Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress. Steps toward fully abolishing the police and prison system. Public ownership of the largest corporations. End all military and economic aid to Israel.
Read that again. A new constitution. No Senate. Police gone. Capitalism replaced.
This is their own document, published in July 2026. Not a rumor. Not a critic's spin. Their words.
And they're winning with it. This year DSA-backed challengers beat three House incumbents: Avila Chevalier over Espaillat in NY-13, 49.4 to 45.9. Kiros over DeGette in CO-1, 49.3 to 43.5. McKinney over Thanedar in MI-13, 51.9 to 48.1.
The old guard is losing primaries to this agenda. Schumer is still Senate Democratic leader and says he's running again. No formal challenger. But nominees like El-Sayed in Michigan won't back him. Slotkin wants new leadership. Durbin is retiring.
Here's what gets me. Regular Americans pay the bills, fight the wars, and keep the republic. These people want to scrap the structure that protects them and hand it to a new one built on their terms.
AP notes the program doesn't necessarily line up exactly with every candidate's agenda. About a third of DSA and Justice Democrats candidates lost. Fair enough. The ones who won didn't hide the program.
In Hamtramck, Michigan, the all-Muslim city council voted in June 2023 to ban Pride and other group flags on city property. Liberal backers called it a betrayal. The Sixth Circuit upheld it as government speech. Secular socialism and faith-driven rules share a ballot line, not a value set. Which one governs when they win?
On November 3, Michigan voters choose between Abdul El-Sayed and Mike Rogers. El-Sayed is not in DSA. He says he's a capitalist. But the coalition that backs him includes this agenda. Go vote against it. The choice is God, Family and Country, or a new constitution written by people who reject the one we have.

Trump Waives New Russia Sanctions Citing National Interest
President Trump signed an executive order Friday night waiving key new sanctions and tariffs on Russia under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The law, which Trump signed last month, was set to take effect Sunday. He certified to Congress that the waiver is in the national interests of the United States at this time.
The order holds off duties that could have hit goods from the biggest buyers of Russian oil and gas, and other measures aimed at Russian officials, banks and energy shippers. Trump has said the pause will stay until he or top officials decide further action is appropriate. It does not touch older sanctions already in place.
This follows Trump’s announcement last week of a deal for Russia to release hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel onto global markets to help ease fuel prices. Diesel has climbed sharply since the Iran war started. The waiver keeps those new tools off the table for now while that arrangement plays out.

Retail Sales Rise 0.8% in September on Higher Gas Prices
U.S. retail sales rose 0.8% in September to $745 billion, according to the Commerce Department. That beat the 0.4% gain economists had expected and followed a revised 1.3% jump in August. The numbers are not adjusted for inflation.
Gasoline stations drove most of the increase. Sales there jumped 6.4% as pump prices climbed. Outside autos and gas, the gain was just 0.2%. Control-group sales, which feed into GDP calculations and strip out gas, autos, building materials and food services, rose only 0.1%.
Consumers spent more at furniture stores, electronics shops and restaurants. They pulled back at sporting goods places and building-material stores. The headline number looks solid, but higher fuel costs account for the bulk of it. That leaves the underlying pace of spending more modest heading into the final quarter.

Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court to Limit Courts’ Power to Vacate Agency Rules
The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on October 14 to decide whether federal judges can wipe out an entire agency rule for everyone, not just the parties in the case. U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer filed a 29-page petition arguing that nothing in the text, context, or history of the Administrative Procedure Act gives courts that “new and far-reaching remedial power.”
The case started with challenges to rules from Health and Human Services, Labor, and Treasury implementing the 2022 No Surprises Act. A district court in Texas sided with the challengers. The full 5th Circuit later vacated some provisions of the rules. The administration wants the justices to review that outcome and set limits.
Sauer pointed to the Court’s 2025 decision in Trump v. CASA, which held that courts generally cannot issue nationwide injunctions. He wrote that vacating a rule for everyone creates the same problems of forum shopping and forces rushed emergency fights. Challengers have until November 13 to respond, though that date can be extended.
A ruling for the government would narrow one of the main tools courts use to block agency actions across the board.
How far should one court's ruling reach when an agency rule is challenged?

Blue Origin Targets Multiple New Glenn Launches a Week by End of Decade
Blue Origin plans to fly its New Glenn rocket multiple times a week by the end of the decade, a company executive said Friday. The goal depends on new launch pads, more landing ships, and a big expansion of its Florida production facilities.
Ian Richardson, senior vice president of operations, laid out the infrastructure push. The company has already spent more than $3 billion on its Cape Canaveral complex. A $330 million addition is aimed at finishing in summer 2027 so it can turn out up to 150 upper stages a year for the heavier New Glenn 9x4 version.
New Glenn has been grounded since a May explosion at its only Florida pad. Crews are rebuilding Launch Complex 36A and starting work on a second pad. Blue Origin has also asked the FAA to raise the yearly launch limit at the site from 12 to 50. Two new landing vessels are in the works as well.
The company is still aiming for a return-to-flight attempt early next year once the pad is ready.

Army Researchers Develop Nanomaterial That Stays Strong at Jet-Engine Heat
Scientists at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory have stabilized a copper-alloy microstructure that keeps its strength at temperatures above 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. That range matches the heat inside turbine engines, where the Defense Department needs materials that do not weaken.
Copper is not normally used in engines. The new microstructure produces properties the team calls extraordinarily high compared with conventional materials. Kristopher A. Darling, a materials scientist in the lab’s Lightweight and Specialty Metals Branch, said, “What we’re seeing is a revolutionary property arising in a class of materials that we never thought was possible.”
The findings appeared in the September issue of Nature. The researchers hope to recreate the same combination of strength and heat resistance in nickel, cobalt or tantalum alloys. Those metals already go into engines, so matching the copper result could open new design options for high-temperature parts.

She measured the flour twice
Ruth wiped her hands on the apron and squinted at the measuring cup. The kitchen light was the old one that buzzed a little when it first came on. She poured the flour into the bowl and then poured it back out, leveling it with the back of a knife the way her mother had shown her.
Her grandson Jake stood at the sticky table, leaning on his elbows and watching. "You already did that," he said. Ruth nodded. "I did. And I'm doing it again." She cracked the eggs one-handed and dropped the shells into the scrap bucket without looking. Jake reached for a spoon and stirred the bowl before she told him to.
They worked the dough together, her hands showing him how to fold without punching it flat. The radio on the counter kept losing the station every time the refrigerator kicked on. When the biscuits were cut and on the tray, Jake opened the oven door and the heat rolled out. Ruth slid the tray in and shut it with her hip.
She turned and looked at the clock. Jake was already wiping the counter with the edge of his sleeve. "Same as yesterday," he said, and she smiled because he was right.

Tesla Shows Roadster That Flies With SpaceX Thrusters
Tesla rolled out its redesigned Roadster on Thursday night at a SpaceX test site near Waco, Texas. The two-seater used suction fans underneath to climb an inverted ramp and hang upside down, then thrusters to spin and land. Later it jumped over a line of other Teslas, including a Semi and Cybertruck, and settled back down in a cloud of condensation.
Elon Musk told the crowd this was “the culmination of incredible work by Tesla and SpaceX engineers working closely together to make something that you haven't seen in any movie.” Vehicle engineering chief Lars Moravy said the car can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second and reach speeds over 230 miles per hour. Range is listed at over 300 miles on a charge. Musk added that it should go “definitely much faster than that” and “crack halfway to the speed of sound.”
Production is set to start in 2028, Musk said. Pricing has not been released. The thrusters come from the SpaceX collaboration, using cold-gas systems. Reservations opened again the same day.
The demo puts a flying stunt on a car that was first teased in 2017 and delayed repeatedly. Buyers who reserved nearly a decade ago still wait for the production version.

Trump Headlines Dalton Rally as Georgia Early Voting Continues
President Donald Trump is in Dalton, Georgia, on Friday for a campaign rally at the municipal airport. He is appearing with Republican Senate candidate Mike Collins and gubernatorial nominee Rick Jackson. Collins is challenging Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff. Jackson faces former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms for governor.
This is Trump’s third stop in the state this year. Early voting started Tuesday and runs through Oct. 30 ahead of the Nov. 3 election. The Dalton event marks the first time Collins and Jackson have shared a stage this fall.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said, “President Trump is the unequivocal leader, best messenger, and unmatched motivator for the Republican Party.” Northwest Georgia remains one of the party’s stronger areas in a state that has drawn national attention in recent cycles.
Republicans are looking for a turnout lift in the final stretch. Democrats Ossoff and Bottoms have a joint rally scheduled for Saturday in Cobb County.

FAA Reviews SpaceX Plan for 456 Starship Launches a Year
SpaceX has asked the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to conduct up to 456 Starship launches and 912 landings each year from its Starbase site in South Texas. That is roughly 18 times the current authorization of 25 launches and 50 landings.
The proposal is phased. The first stage would allow 100 launches and 200 landings any day of the week. The second would reach the full numbers but limit operations to weekdays. The FAA is preparing an environmental impact statement and has scheduled public meetings in Brownsville and Port Isabel for mid-November, plus a virtual session.
Starbase has flown far fewer vehicles so far this year. The request comes while regulators are also revising broader launch rules. Residents near the site have raised concerns in past reviews about noise, debris, and closures.
The higher cadence would support more frequent orbital flights once the vehicle is fully operational. Comments on the plan are open through the end of November.

Warsh Gives No Rate Signal at Bangkok Meetings
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh spoke Friday at the IMF-World Bank meetings in Bangkok and declined to preview the October decision. “I don’t prejudge meetings,” he said. “I don’t believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings that we have in the balance of this year.”
He noted the Fed raised rates in September, saying officials “removed a dose of accommodation about a month ago.” Warsh expressed surprise that global economies have held up amid tighter policy and energy shocks. He pointed to an artificial-intelligence investment surge that is boosting demand and adding to near-term price pressure.
Markets shifted toward a hold at the late-October meeting after his remarks, according to CME FedWatch. Inflation data this week showed the consumer price index up 3.7 percent over the year and producer prices rising sharply.
The next policy meeting is set for Oct. 27–28. Warsh has avoided forward guidance since taking the chair in May.

Hurricane Trudy Weakens Near Mexico’s Pacific Coast
Hurricane Trudy is moving north-northwest toward the southwestern and west-central coast of Mexico. As of early Friday afternoon, an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft found maximum sustained winds near 85 mph, down from earlier satellite estimates around 110–120 mph. The center sat about 225 miles southwest of Acapulco.
The National Hurricane Center said the storm is still expected to approach the coast on Saturday and pass near it Saturday night into Sunday. Some strengthening remains possible before that closest approach. Hurricane warnings cover parts of the coast from Manzanillo northward.
Swells are already reaching the shore and will spread northward. Heavy rain raises the risk of flooding and landslides in Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco. The system is not forecast to make a direct landfall but will stay close enough for significant effects.
Mexican authorities and U.S. forecasters continue to update the track and intensity. Residents along the Pacific coast face rising seas and wind through the weekend.
Will the weekend track stay offshore or shift closer to shore?

Katie Zacharia Out as White House Press Secretary After Five Days
Katie Zacharia is no longer serving as White House press secretary after five days in the role, a White House official said Friday.
President Donald Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a rally in Georgia that he had spoken to Zacharia and urged her to reconsider the job. "I said to her honestly, 'If I were you, I'd reconsider... think about it. But I would reconsider,'" Trump said, according to Reuters.
A White House official told Reuters that Zacharia was "let go" from the role. Fox News, citing a White House official, reported she was "transitioning out" of the press secretary position. CNN, citing advisers to the president, reported that Trump fired her.
Zacharia started the job on Monday and held her first White House briefing on Tuesday. She succeeded Karoline Leavitt.
Zacharia said in an interview Thursday that she did not pass the California bar exam, according to Reuters and other outlets.
The White House has not named a replacement.

UPDATE: Schools Closed Friday After Bend Shooting; Suspect Used Shotgun Bought by Mother
All schools in the Bend-La Pine district closed Friday after a shooting Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, that left three children and a teacher dead.
A 16-year-old Bend resident forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors with a long gun, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said. He was shot and killed by a community member who pursued him inside before officers arrived minutes later.
The children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. Police have not named the victims, the shooter or the bystander.
According to the Associated Press, citing a law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity, the shooter used a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother.
Gov. Tina Kotek said the community member's actions stopped further loss of life. "To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life: Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well," she said.
The first 911 call came at 12:59 p.m. local time from a person in a vehicle who reported being shot at by someone with a long gun. Police have not confirmed a motive or whether the shooter had any connection to the school.

Lake Mead Barrel Victim Identified as Arkansas Man Edward Jackson
Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse on Thursday identified the man found in a barrel at Lake Mead as Edward “Buddy” Lelburian Jackson of Arkansas. A boater discovered the remains in a corroded 55-gallon drum near Hemenway Harbor in May 2022, after drought dropped the water. Jackson was in his mid-to-late 50s when he died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Police believe he was killed in the early 1980s, based on remnants of clothing and interviews with his family. His family last saw him in the early 1980s. He had lived in California and Utah and was known to travel the country, but police said he had no known connection to Las Vegas. The killer remains unknown. Genetic genealogy led investigators to a living relative, and a DNA match confirmed his identity four years after the discovery.

Blue Origin Adds Florida Pads to Push New Glenn Cadence
Blue Origin said Friday it will add more New Glenn launch and landing pads in Florida and is spending $330 million expanding its Rocket Park campus to support higher New Glenn production. Senior Vice President of Operations Ian Richardson said the investments aim to build "the capacity to support more missions, more reliably, and more efficiently." The company says it has invested more than $3 billion in Florida facilities, supported by more than 5,000 employees. The Rocket Park expansion targets completion in summer 2027 and annual output of up to 150 upper stages. New Glenn has been grounded since a rocket exploded on the pad during a test fire in May. The company aims to return it to flight by the end of 2026. Blue Origin is seeking FAA approval to raise the permitted launch rate at Launch Complex 36A from 12 to 50 a year. The goal is multiple flights a week by the end of the decade.

CoreWeave Bonds Plunge as AI Debt Worries Grow
CoreWeave shares and bonds fell sharply this week as investors fretted over the Nvidia-backed company's debt load of nearly $50 billion, according to LSEG data. The yield on its 2031 bond rose as high as 16 percent before retreating to around 14 percent, and the cost of insuring its debt against default over five years blew past 1,100 basis points, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. CoreWeave stock fell 15.5 percent on Wednesday and another 2 percent on Thursday. Rising borrowing costs have raised the price of financing for data-center builders. Reuters described the bond rout as a test of investors' willingness to keep financing the AI buildout.

Neanderthal Shoulder Hole Points to Ancient Spear Strike
A 15-millimeter circular hole in a Neanderthal shoulder blade from Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan may be the earliest known evidence of a fatal wooden spear attack. Cambridge archaeologists who studied the partial skeleton, called Shanidar A, said the wound, from about 75,000 years ago, fits a sharpened wooden spear that entered the chest from the front and exited through the shoulder blade. The same individual had survived a severe facial injury earlier in life, which the researchers said suggests care from group members. Researchers published the findings in Scientific Reports. A flint or stone tip would leave a flat or angular hole rather than a round one, they said. Whether the blow came in a hunt or a fight remains open.
What does a wooden spear through the chest tell us about Neanderthal life?

Trump Rules Out Nuclear Weapons Against Iran
President Donald Trump said Thursday he would not use nuclear weapons against Iran.
In a Newsmax interview, Trump said, "No, I wouldn’t use nuclear. We don’t have to."
He was asked about reports that the Pentagon has drawn up plans that could use the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, known as the mother of all bombs, against Iranian targets.
Trump said the weapon "is not nuclear at all. This is just an extremely large bomb."
He raised the possibility of further strikes, saying of a suspected nuclear site called Pickaxe Mountain, "We may have to go there. We'll take a shot at that one. We'll knock it out fast."
Asked whether that would involve American ground troops, Trump said, "No, I don't see that."
