“My father observed that most buildings, and most buildings that we truly love, are not the work of architects. The agreeable settledness of the old English town, he reasoned, was the work of local craftsmen…”
—Sir Roger Scruton
Tucked away in southeast London, Eltham Palace is a fascinating blend of royal history and Art Deco glamour.
Originally a medieval palace with roots stretching back to the 1300s and later home to Tudor royalty, it was reimagined in the 1930s by wealthy socialites Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. Today, visitors can wander through 19 acres of beautifully maintained gardens before exploring the palace’s iconic Art Deco interiors.
A hidden corner of London that feels worlds away from the city bustle.

A beautiful film of Selby in the North of England, as it was in 1965. Scenes of everyday life and plenty of old cars to spot. This is a lovely window to the past which was captured by the local Cine Club.
A sweet shop in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Those tall glass jars must be brimming with dolly mixture, fruit salads, liquorice allsorts, blackjacks, raspberry drops, and fizzy sherbet fountains. England, 1960s.
