I gave a junior associate an assignment at 5:30 PM yesterday.

I told him:

“No rush. Tomorrow is completely fine.”

Then at 8:46 PM I emailed:

“How’s this coming?”

He replied immediately:

“Almost done. I thought tomorrow was okay but happy to send tonight.”

I waited 40 minutes.

Then wrote:

“Tomorrow is fine.”

At 10:17 he sent me the finished draft anyway.

I didn't open it.

This morning at 9:06 I emailed:

“Any reason this came in last night?”

He walked into my office completely confused.

“You asked how it was coming.”

I nodded.

“I asked for a status. I didn’t ask you to ruin your evening.”

He actually apologized.

That’s when I knew he was ready for more responsibility.

Anyone can work hard when given an impossible deadline.

The real test is whether you can convince someone to manufacture the impossible deadline themselves and then feel guilty about it.
