From Concept to Impact: Transforming the Media Landscape for Women
@AMWIK, under the @FemnetProg -STITCH program, embarked on an initiative to combat sexual harassment and gender-based violence (GBV) in Kenya's media sector, sparked by a sobering report revealing that Kenya led Africa in media-related sexual harassment.
Despite navigating a tough landscape, including Covid-19 disruptions, cultural resistance , and legal backlashes, the project pushed through boundaries to deliver lasting institutional change.
The results were groundbreaking:
✅Policy Reform & Advocacy: Created a model sexual harassment policy and pushed for its adoption across media houses, while leading the Gender Committee of Kenya's Media Sector Working Group.
✅Male Engagement: Pioneered Male Cafés and engagement programs to bring men into the conversation as allies.
✅Direct Support: Provided critical psychosocial support and legal advice to affected women journalists, helping them find their voices and speak out.
✅Widespread Institutional Impact: Spurred a rise in media stories tracking GBV and unpaid care work, accelerated leadership training for women (some of whom ran for political office), and established a growing, revitalized AMWIK membership with a brand relaunch and new website.
Throughout the years, AMWIK continues to impact society through media initiatives like this. Partner with us today. 📩 Contact us at [email protected].

We are proud to announce our official partnership with @_Nalafem for the upcoming 5th Nalafem Summit, taking place from 1st–2nd July 2026 in Nairobi.
This year’s convening centers on the theme, "Power Meets Capital: When Women Back Women," marking a pivotal shift from mere representation toward sustained political power, protection, and economic backing.
We are glad to leverage the power of media and storytelling to support Nalafem’s mission of uniting African women politicians, activists, investors, and philanthropists to co-create a durable, cross-generational feminist power alliance across the continent. #Partnerships
According to our recent research, 70% of journalists set to cover the 2027 elections have never covered an election before.
As political temperatures rise, the safety of our journalists, particularly women, who face a disproportionate threat of physical, sexual, and online harassment must be a priority. We have a duty to equip, train, and protect the next generation of media practitioners.
