"With many teens engaging in some kind of sexual messaging ... the evidence suggests it’s time to move beyond a DARE-like response to sexting." In my latest for @thenation, we asked, "What does a good replacement for deviance & danger messaging look like?" https://t.co/cNjPbzpAc7
It is suggested by @amyadele and @ntnsndr that future decentralized social networks must support community governance and hold moderators and administrators accountable. 🤝
We've broken down and analyzed the key points for the AKASHA Foundation here. 👇

As people migrate away from Twitter to Mastodon, “dealing with harm & conflict effectively within our own online communities will require a shift in mindset,” @ntnsndr & @amyadele write https://t.co/FKiqfbgQFy
Mastodon isn't a Twitter replacement, it is an opportunity for more truly democratic social media.

Decentralization is cool, but to address online harm effectively, we'll need to learn from #TransformativeJustice and #RestorativeJustice. How can we scale that? Subsidiarity! Here's my article on this with @ntnsndr https://t.co/GTv6bdQ6TP
Lots of discussion about online communities and where to start with introducing restorative justice to moderators. Facebook groups or other volunteer-moderated smaller communities are potential areas to study. Share with @amyadele ideas of online communities she could contact!
Using restorative justice to achieve a particular goal (e.g. elicit an apology) or doing it without careful work can actually cause further harm - cautionary tale for online platforms hoping to use aspects of restorative approaches to gain a 'quick win' for their aims.
The interventions, mechanisms, and goals of content moderation and restorative approaches are often very different. Interesting to explore ways of changing content moderation to be more restorative.
The needs of those harmed are often overlooked in content moderation and are important in a restorative approach. Challenges of how to do this in systems where online platforms are out to make profit.
Really fascinating event tonight with @amyadele exploring ways in which #restorativejustice and #transformativejustice can be used to address online harms. Restorative approaches are so different to what content moderation is currently doing on online platforms.

Corporate profits only accounted for roughly 11% of price growth from 1979 to 2019.
Today, record corporate profits account for 53.9% of price increases.
Folks, corporate greed is driving inflation, not workers asking for better wages.
And tbh, I still have a few levels I could go w/both #ungrading & #OER. It’s not necessarily bc I don’t know how to give up control… no, I’m running into the awkward combo of: HOW to do the ultimate w/both + #LMS usage + dealing with all.the.other crud of academia/world.
