@FromPhDtoLife If you want to be a good colleague, you have to drop that attitude of constant competition that grad school likely reinforced at every turn. Especially at a small liberal arts school, your colleagues aren’t your competition — they’re your coworkers.
@FromPhDtoLife Best advice I got: “Do the next thing you can bear to do.” I’d get so caught up in the big picture, the anxiety, the *plan* that I wouldn’t do the day-in, day-out stuff. Fixing some citations is better than not opening the word doc. That, and: value your hobbies. You need them.
Imagine that one of these beautiful children - all shot to death last night at Michigan State University - belonged to you.
As long as there are guns everywhere, our children aren’t safe anywhere.
Don’t sit on the sidelines. We need every voice and vote. Text ACT to 644-33
@saramfung As a Canadian in the south: pretty frequently! More often it’s “ah, I couldn’t quite place your accent but I knew it wasn’t an American one!” But occasionally “Oh yeah I knew you were Canadian.” Used to surprise me: I assumed I sounded like a pretty generic midwesterner.
Folks, have you ever successfully integrated two adult female cats, one of whom is determined to kill the other? Been trying to do so for a *year* with zero progress. Vet visits, feliway plugs and collars, even kitty Prozac. Nothing. I’m at the end of the line, here: help?
@aadeleon John Schad’s Queer Fish: Christian Unreason from Darwin to Derrida. Not always openly humorous but a real eye for the absurd. And one particular review essay by Lori Branch that makes me laugh aloud every time I re read the opening paragraphs.
I have a few ideas but nothing is ringing right. It’s a required core curriculum class, and a new one to me, Protestant reformation —> civil rights, and I’m trying to play to my literary strengths while still teaching the required philosophical texts.
Joining the “thinking about spring syllabi” train … what contemporary work would you pair with Frankenstein in a freshman “western civ” (I know) style class? Any country or genre, thinking about pulling on ideas of monstrosity, with a whole lot of history of ideas btwn them.
@JSRichman Something of a negotiation. We very informally express preferences as to courses/times, chair puts together a tentative schedule, we weigh in/bargain a little, chair states gaps/needs, schedule gets adjusted. Works because we’re a smallish dept (12) and do a lot of core teaching
