Holy Spirit was poured out on all flesh then, and our artistics images and the images we carry around in our minds should reflect that truth.

As you celebrate Pentecost Sunday, remember it wasn’t just men in that Upper Room where Holy Spirit was poured out on all flesh. There were women, too.Acts 1:14 includes the women and Mary, Jesus’ mom among those who met regularly, and Acts 2:1 says they were ALL together.

So many icons of this even only include the 12 with flames above their heads. Others only include the 12 and Mary.

The most accurate icons should probably be a huge crowd of around 120 (Acts 1:15).

I am God’s. God will lead me.

To center myself, I walked around the garden breathing this for a while this morning.

I feel un-centered because I struggle with insomnia and am feeling deeply the disappointments and uncertainty of this liminal underemployed space I occupy.

But I am God’s. God will lead me. I really believe that. But I need to breathe it, to incorporate this ritual into my being, to convince my breath, my life, that it is true.

Like the ancients did with the Jesus prayer, I think it needs to be my “prayer without ceasing” today.

ince 2002, this time of year meant it was time for the ritual. I just completed a year of classes and I donned my cap and gown and marched with pomp and circumstance to celebrate the completion and new beginning at the ritual of Commencement.

I just want it to be a once-and-done-it-doesn’t-hurt-anymore ritual. It’s not.

It’s a ritual I have to do over and over and over in this liminal state. Particularly now, today, when I feel the loss keenly.
