On International Workers Day I'd like to give a shout out to all those (mostly women) doing caring work, paid and unpaid. Care work is vital to labour, the economy and society. It remains poorly paid and undervalued. (No class struggle without gender struggle!)
@carljackmiller Ah Carl, I'm only joking with you, but I was practically screaming at the speaker when you pivoted from 'the calls didnt work' so quickly. Amazing podcast, obviously. I may be a cold-call pro, but I ain't no journalist. Hats off to you :D cheers for replying!
Mari didn't know me from Adam, but she took time to search through records for me so my illegally adopted uncle could be reunited with his family. That was mere months ago and I naively thought I'd have more time to thank her. Such a good person. May she rest in peace.
It is with profound sadness and deep regret that we share the news of the passing of our beloved friend and colleague, Mari Steed. Mari passed away at home after a short but serious illness and in the warm and loving embrace of her cherished family. See: https://t.co/zcwgSVGIzQ
Really looking forward to supporting the launch of this campaign. Seven long years of motherhood = seven years of dealing with the lack of reasonable childcare and putting my own career and creative goals on the back-burner. #EveryChild

Sounds utopian, doesn't it? And yet it's the reality for many across the EU...
✔️It could be here, too.
❤️Like & share this post to show you support public early years education & care, and help end the #ChildcareCrisis
I've really missed writing creatively/for the joy of writing, so I've created a Substack so I can do just that! Subscribe, read, comment, nothing, do what you like! https://t.co/4Si597rMSf
Really looking forward @maryohara1's new book.
A much needed assessment of the 14 years of austerity.
And, of course, the legacy of austerity will have scarred many people's lives permanently.
Let's hope the new Labour govt is end of these mean-spirted, punative policies.
IV/ At the end of the day, I had to make the choice that it's in my childrens' best interest - for me to be with them more than just a little, and that means, once again, putting off career development. I can't pretend, however, that it's not frustrating.
II/ It's incredibly frustrating to want to work, to be putting myself out there, work on improving my skills, and be met with a labour market that is so inflexible to the needs of mothers, carers, and the children and families that need them.
1/ I had to decline a really wonderful job opportunity which could have turned into a career for life, due to the unavailability of childcare and inflexibility of the role in terms of WFH.

The stark impact of the division of unpaid care can be seen in the impact of the birth of a first child on women and men. New fathers' wages are in line with the wages of men without children, while the wages of mothers fall dramatically compared to women without children
Been off Twitter for an age, because having three children is infinitely harder than having two. Finally emerging from the endless sickness phase of this year, maybe.
@Andy__Bell__ It also strikes me that the UK govt has categorically done this with many other (usually physical) health conditions. They'll peddle any old shite to cut their welfare spending, especially if they get to stigmatise people at the same time 🫠
This new article by Järvinnen & Mik-Meyer on "gendered service work in academia" made me go through all stages of grief on a loop and I think EVERYONE in academic should read it 👇https://t.co/kzarbB5Y2n
Very excited to have a chapter in this wonderful text! Thank you to @jennifer_johns_ and @Sarah_M_Hall for including me. This chapter was longer in the making than my three year old 😅 I discuss economic reforms and the disproportionate impact on women (and poorer women).
Young criminalised women's needs are neglected
@IndyMCross guest blogs for me on new call from @Agenda_alliance & @YouthJusticePk for gender-sensitive support for criminalised young women
