The only thing stopping me from entering a full existential meltdown today is reminding myself that New Brunswick confidently elected @susanholt just a few weeks ago.
There is hope.
@AaronBillard I’ve started a Bluesky account too. I find it to feel much less heavy than Twitter. But I also haven’t found as many local voices there yet, which I find to be unfortunate.
@Bigdazw Unlike in Canada, a US voter can vote for someone for president and vote for the opposite party to represent their area in congress and senate which would impact policy.
There has to be a line for what is acceptable comportment for someone who wants to be president of the US.
Two of the most qualified women in the country ran for president against an unqualified, racist game show host who had a history of committing fraud and sexual abuse. And the country was basically split 50-50. That should tell us some things.
He was the worst President in history. And when he got voted out, he tried to stage a coup. Then he stole national secrets and sold the ones he didn't store in the bathroom.
He was convicted of fraud, found liable of sexual assault and convicted of 34 felonies. He is half a billion dollars in debt, owned by God only knows who, and the biggest national security risk the nation has ever had.
But at least he's not a Black woman.
This is all a big experiment right? Some large R&D firm is just testing the hypothesis that, even in the year of our Lord 2024, and even against an outwardly vile, rude and very problematic felon, America won’t elect a woman president, because it’s too rooted in patriarchy?
Remember when it was NB election night and we knew who won 20 minutes after the polls closed? Elections NB is awesome. Canada is awesome.
FPTP sucks but is better than electoral college so I guess we should take the W?
As a Canadian, this is mind blowing. You know that right above your northern border we just… show up to vote? No yelling. No rushing. No pandering. No (or very few) lines.
Your elections don’t need to be like this.
Have so far had two people coming and yelling at people to leave the line at the polling place because it's closing.
THIS IS SUPER ILLEGAL, DO NOT LEAVE THE LINE.
@SnaggleJ And if I had been at work when that had happened I would have asked you, but instead I was yelling at my tv from my living room and angry tweeting 😂
This is not even to mention my aunts and uncles and cousins who were local or the people from our church who supported each other and us.
My life does not look like this and it is very existentially lonely realizing you or your spouse have to take care of everything yourself.
Parenting without a village is hard.
Growing up I was at one of my grandparent’s houses nearly every day - fed by them, led by them. They helped out at our place too - cleaning, maintenance, etc.
Anyway, I can see how that would have been very helpful for my parents. 🙃
@dustykd Additionally I don’t think now is the time to promise reduced taxes nearly anywhere given the state of housing and healthcare in our provinces. We need more government investment, not less.
@dustykd Roads and bridges are so expensive to maintain that I think that user fees for these things makes sense. Otherwise everyone (including those who never use it) have to pay for it through taxes and reduced services elsewhere.
This has been one of the hardest part of being a mom. And it gets worse the older they get because they transition from not being able to thank you to taking what you do for them for granted.
I am significantly more appreciated by my employer, despite being replaceable there.
