"They were just out in front. There was the Beatles — and then there was everyone else. And everyone else could be great, but the Beatles were leading the way. And that’s just irrefutably true. I mean, if you just look back and follow the history of the music, that’s clearly what was going on. And it was obvious at the time.
"It’s hard to explain to somebody that wasn’t there at that time how profound it was. I think that they were just hungry for anything that would inspire them, and they weren’t musical snobs at all. Having that kind of open-door policy of 'let’s try anything' was really revolutionary. You know, I don’t know if people really understand how incredibly, just, bold that was. To kind of just leave the format that you arrived in, and invent another one. It’s just unbelievable.
"You know, before the Beatles, you didn’t really see rock stars trying to evolve. They were quite happy to have a hit, and often the follow-up was almost exactly the same. That’s what I’ve always really been amazed at — the Beatles had that incredible success and really could have put anything out, and it would have been a hit. But they kept their head and weren’t affected by all that going on around them and focused on music.
"And they had such great taste, you know? When you think about the hideous things people did with the Moog synthesizer, the Beatles used it so tastefully [on Abbey Road] that you hardly noticed it, it was just part of the texture of the record. They had such a great sense of sound, of textures — I think it’s one of the reasons those albums still hold up."
"It’s just strange, isn’t it, when you think about it, how all the perfect pieces of the puzzle were there. This really starts to get into a spiritual level of perfection [sighs]. What are the chances of that falling together, those kind of singers being in one band, let alone being great players and writers, you know? It’s startling, it won’t be done again. It’s a force of nature bigger than all of us."

"When the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, it was probably one of the milestones in human history. There are what scientists call singularities. They happen every once in a while and have a quantum effect on life as we know it on the face of the planet. When the Beatles first appeared, it really changed the world.
"The clocked stopped for me; everything stopped. It was like in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, when the apes went up to the monolith and touched it: a quantum leap forward. It changed my sense of being. I mean, it was close to a religious experience.
"It was spiritual music. It was a gentle prodding to open up your eyes. They weren’t heavy-handed about it. They put a spotlight on a point of view. I mean, if they had run for Kings of the World, I’m sure they would’ve been voted in. Lennon was really right, you know — about being more popular than Christ. No question about it. It was a new way of thinking, that’s what it was.
"Let’s be honest here. I couldn’t shine Lennon and McCartney’s boots. I couldn’t shine George Harrison’s boots when it comes to songwriting. They're bigger than Gershwin, bigger than all of ‘em.
"I don’t fool myself. To me, they were the most important band that has ever existed. End of story. Everybody else can KISS their boot-heels, including me. The rest of us have just been playing catch-up ever since."

A me. A mia madre. A mio fratello. Forse sarei rimasta a casa mia.

Happy Anniversary to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band . . .
#MikePortnoy: "Sgt. Pepper is not only the landmark and groundbreaking album for the Beatles, it’s the landmark and groundbreaking album for rock and roll. This is the album that changed everything — no album had ever sounded anything like this. You have 'Within You Without You' which is like Indian music, and then you have 'When I’m 64' which is almost like old '40s music, and then 'Sgt Pepper (Reprise)' which is hard rock.
"And then beyond the music, the Beatles look completely different, with long hair and mustaches for the first time, they come out with this album cover that nobody had ever seen anything like, it had the lyrics on the back which nobody had ever done. On every level it just took the idea of an album to another level.
"I mean, that was the thing: it felt like an album, that you listened to from beginning to end . . . up until then albums were just collections of songs, but this was the first time that it felt like you were watching a movie from start to finish.
"To me, it’s not only my number one Beatles album, it’s my number one album of all time. It is literally, I think, the greatest album ever made."
