“In practice, however, technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise it, finance it, regulate it and use it.

THANK YOU POPE LEO FOR SAYING THIS.

Time for the “technology is a tool with no inherent moral position” idea to die!

A.I. has a place: to do slavish work. We have invented many things to do such work for us (e.g. washers, power tools, etc). Overall, the existence of these things is good. They give us more time for higher things. But thinking AI can or should replace human *thought* will end us.

Gotta stop being such a stupid sinner

Antisemitism is evil, it is increasing, and people are right to be concerned about it. They should also be concerned about the prevalence of attitudes like the ones Cardinal Pizzaballa here condemns, because dehumanizing Palestinians is no less evil than dehumanizing Jews. And when Israeli leaders exhibit such attitudes, they give aid and comfort to antisemitism.

I’m tired of the Aristotelian physics slander. Yes, heavier object fall faster than light ones, all else equal, *when immersed in a fluid* which is every environment Aristotle had access to. Do the experiment yourself. Drop a bowling ball and a same-sized ball of foam.

There’s a great paper called “Aristotle’s Physics: a Physicist’s Look” that demonstrates how Aristotelian physics is a special case approximation of Newtonian physics in the same way Newtonian physics is a special case approximation of relativity and QM.

Aristotle’s physics reigned for so long not because people were unthinkingly dogmatic, but because it was genuinely hard to come up with better models.

Aristotle had to model celestial objects separately from terrestrial objects because his terrestrial model is describing *terminal* velocity and breaks down in the zero-friction limit. So he had two incompatible models. Newton unified them. Now we have two incompatible models - QM and GR - and are looking for unification. The more things change…

Two days ago, dozens of Israeli settlers, accompanied by the Israeli army, seized land in the Christian town of Beit Sahour in the West Bank — the second major land seizure after settlers took over the Ush Ghurab area and established a new illegal settlement there.

Residents are calling on the international community, churches, and Christian leaders to act to stop land confiscation and the intimidation of their communities.

🚨Israel assassinated Imad Miqdad yesterday in a drone strike, targeting his solar-powered phone charging station in Gaza yesterday.

Miqdad had been providing civilians with a rare means of communication amid ongoing electricity cuts.

The strike killed him and destroyed the facility, further limiting access to basic services and connectivity for residents.
