Brazil is facing the most decisive moment in its recent history as it enters the presidential runoff, with two opposing visions for the country at stake: on one side, democratic reconstruction under President Lula; on the other, the far right led by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the direct heir to his father Jair Bolsonaro’s political project.

This candidacy represents the continuation of pandemic denialism, complicity in and leadership of the January 8 attacks against democratic institutions, and the open glorification of torturers and the 1964 military dictatorship. Closely aligned with international far-right interests and Donald Trump in the United States, this political movement poses a direct threat to Brazil’s national sovereignty and to the autonomy of its people.

It represents an immediate threat to our democracy, fundamental human rights, and the cultural life of our country. We cannot forget this political group’s record: dismantling the Ministry of Culture, cutting funding for the arts, and openly supporting radical factions seeking to roll back historic achievements, including laws protecting women from domestic violence and femicide.

The first-round result showed an extremely close race, marked by more than thirty million abstentions. Every vote will make a difference between moving forward and seeing the country move backward. We urgently need to come together, reach out to those who abstained, and mobilize every citizen to defend our future and safeguard our democracy.
