beyoncé threads water throughout the film, alluding to the divine feminine, with oshun and venus always just beneath the surface. venus, born from the sea, carries tales of tragic love, heartbreak, and passion, while oshun, who dwells in the river, holds stories of lost children, grief, and healing.

in its themes, visual imagery, and even the soundscape, the presence of water, rivers, and the ocean is pivotal to the film. to top it all off, she incorporates radio emissions recorded from venus, where days are longer than years. this makes lemonade feel both cosmic and intimate at once, with layers upon layers to be studied for generations to come.
