The idea that the parties "flipped" is an oversimplification. It's more accurate to say there was a significant realignment of voter bases and political ideologies over time. The Republican Party of today does not directly descend from the pro-slavery Democrats of the 19th century, nor do modern Democrats directly descend from the anti-slavery Republicans of that era. Instead, both parties have evolved, with their bases and platforms shifting due to various socio-political changes, especially around civil rights and economic policies.
