Current zones of mandatory evacuation for civilian families in the remaining parts of Donetsk Oblast under Ukrainian control:

The evacuation zones (yellow) in areas under Ukrainian control cover an area of approximately 2,520 km² out of ~4,130 km² of Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk Oblast, which equates to about 61% of the territory.

Just 1,610 km² of Donetsk Oblast remain in an area with only recommended evacuation orders, rather than mandatory. That means that approximately 94% of the region is either under Russian control or under mandatory evacuations (effectively meaning they are "dead" areas).

This equates to about 97% of the total area of Donbas being either under Russian control, or "dead" areas, with only around 3% of Donbas being liveable areas under Ukrainian control.

Additionally, approximately 30% of Slovyansk city and 10% of Kramatorsk city are part of these evacuation zones, which include the most dangerous streets and neighbourhoods.

A total of 92,932 civilians remain in Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk Oblast, and 0 in Ukrainian-controlled Luhansk Oblast. This number has more than halved since January 2026, when it was reported at 192,600. It has decreased by nearly 40,000 in just the last 2 months.

In the coming months, the final areas of Donetsk Oblast will be declared areas of mandatory evacuation, and the region will become the second in Ukraine (other than Crimea) after Luhansk to officially be either fully occupied, or "dead".

The end of 2026 may finally mark the end of Donbas as an area of Ukrainian society, after nearly 13 years of war.

When China was growing rapidly in the early 2000s to the 2010s, almost all economist-journalist-dissidents in Western capitals claimed that the GDP numbers were falsified. China is an autocratic communist state where information is curated and published, so the claims got some traction. However, China was consuming commodities and raising its manufacturing output rapidly. Evidence lay in its rising share of global exports and resources consumed. China was growing not just its economy but also its CNP. By 2025, the US admitted that China was a peer that surpassed American economic, geopolitical and technological power on many metrics. Reality has a curious tendency of catching up, usually much after the propagandists have hung up their boots.

Muddying the waters by citing misleading claims put forth by malign actors works for a few news cycles. But the larger objective is to delegitimize statistical evidence in public consciousness and sow mistrust. As India grows, grifters and political opportunists will double down. Basic economic evidence gets treated as post-truth to create cognitive dissonance. It’s an important part of foreign regime change and destabilization efforts.

Increases in capital investments, affordability, human development scores, indigenous technology and military capabilities, manufacturing scale, educational standards, and leverage in global affairs are intrinsically linked to GDP growth but must be discussed in detail separately. A lot of India’s growth will flow from domestic capital creation since the West has little interest in pouring FDI into a potential competitor. Therefore, the negative portrayal of the country will be far worse than it ever was with China, given the latter was a darling of western corporates and governments for decades.

What we are seeing is a multidimensional narrative war - economy, academia, media, culture, race, religion, institutions, environment, technological capabilities and democratic processes are all targets. Mercenary economic hitmen are just a few wolves in the pack.
