#2 Here comes the Proposer-Builder Separation (PBS)
Ethereum’s researchers introduced PBS to tackle MEV strategically. The idea is simple yet powerful and is an innovative design separating two critical tasks in Ethereum block production:
• Block Builders: Specialists who gather and optimally order transactions, skilled at maximizing MEV extraction efficiently and ethically.
• Proposers (Validators): The entities responsible for proposing finalized blocks on-chain, who select from the blocks presented by builders. Validators don’t directly interact with MEV extraction—rather, they choose blocks based purely on economic incentives.
This separation reduces complexity and allows validators to focus purely on security and economic selection, while builders compete in an open market to deliver optimized blocks, effectively externalizing MEV extraction and minimizing centralization pressures on validators.
PBS introduces market competition among specialized builders who offer blocks through auction-like mechanisms (e.g., Flashbots’ MEV-Boost). Validators select blocks with maximum value (fees + MEV), without needing MEV-extraction expertise.
This approach effectively democratizes validator participation: smaller validators lacking sophisticated MEV strategies remain profitable and viable, thus maintaining decentralization. However, while PBS resolves validator-level centralization, it requires vigilance to ensure builders themselves don’t centralize excessively.
Additionally, PBS reduces harmful MEV strategies (e.g., outright censorship), as validators prefer blocks aligning with network fairness principles, especially under public scrutiny.
