This is Frank Embree.

He was only 19 years old on June 17, 1899, when he was accused of assaulting a 12-year-old white girl, Willie Dougherty, near Burton, Missouri.

He was arrested, but he escaped to Kansas.

Missouri authorities traced him to Kansas, captured him and brought him back to Missouri, where he was jailed in Mexico.

He was supposed to receive a trial.

On July 22, 1899, officers took him from the jail toward Fayette, where his trial was scheduled.

They never made it.

A huge white mob intercepted the officers, overpowered them and abducted Embree.

The mob was led by the girl's father.

They dragged Embree to the area where the alleged assault had occurred and demanded a confession.

He refused.

So they stripped the 19-year-old naked, tied him up and began whipping him with rawhides and buggy whips. He endured 103 lashes while the crowd watched, cheering and taking photographs.

His body was torn and bleeding, yet he continued refusing to confess.

The torture continued until he finally broke and said what they wanted to hear.

When they were satisfied with their savagery, they put a rope around his neck and hanged him from a tree, but not before they publicly castrated him.

More than 3,000 people gathered to watch.

Photographs were taken of his mutilated body and his killers.

Yet despite the identifiable faces in those photographs, nobody was arrested or prosecuted for his murder.
