Whatever anyone thinks of al-Sharaa or his past, he now has a mandate to hold Syria together and keep it peaceful. The Golan dispute cannot be settled with a Bible quote, and Syria cannot afford another decade of competing armies and ungoverned territory. A functioning Syrian state would make it harder for ISIS and al-Qaeda networks to recruit, move and rebuild. That requires Kurdish, Druze and other communities to have a real place in the state. Unity imposed by force would create the very insurgency the Syrian government needs to prevent.

Türkiye should push the integration of armed groups into Syrian institutions while avoiding a confrontation with Israel on Syrian soil. Every new strike or territorial incursion makes it harder for al-Sharaa to persuade Syrians that diplomacy can protect them.

The US has more influence over this outcome than anyone else. If it wants a unified Syria that can contain extremist groups, it needs to press Israel to stop strikes and incursions while helping negotiate security arrangements for the border. The test is whether Syria can come together without another war starting around it.

Israel is setting the conditions for chaos in Syria, which will undoubtedly result in a resurgence of ISIS/AQ.

To prevent this, and to stop all Israeli aggression, the U.S. must restrain the Israelis by cutting off all aid. Israel’s actions are sabotaging U.S. interests in the region, full stop.

If Israel conducts attacks in Syria, Sharaa will be forced to either respond & then be targeted by Israel, or face hostility from his base of hardline Sunnis. This is an un-winnable situation for Sharaa, and for us.

Let me be clear: I do not support Sharaa nor am I happy to see him in power, or at the White House for that matter. But we put him in power and legitimized his presidency, and now we have to deal with the consequences and navigate the fallout if it goes wrong.

If Sharaa gets killed or is militarily challenged, ISIS will come back and the U.S. will get sucked right back into Syria.

I remain wary of Sharaa because of his past. But the chaos that will ensue if he is removed is far more dangerous for us now than if he had never been brought to power in the first place.
