From coal to words -tunnelling for rich resources, bringing to light the long buried, celebrating roots and connections
washing up in the bathhouse…
Carol Dawber and Kathleen Gallagher will be sharing their knowledge of Jean Devanny so we can discover, recover and remember this time faded socialist activist and writer who was described by her contemporaries as being extraordinarily energetic vivid, valiant and temerarious.
We are so pleased that over 20 people have already booked in to attend the Blackball Readers and Writers Festival this Labour Weekend. Over the weekend we will pay tribute to the extraordinary Jean Devanny- 1894-1962.
Will be brilliant to see this film directed by @jase_b@hokitikaregent on Thursday the 9th of August. I’ll get vertigo just watching Jase and his adventurous mates climb Trøllkonufingur tho.
The Labour Weekend Festival will also have 'discussion in the bathhouse' as a theme. The Blackball Bathhouse, a place of historic political discussion, jokes and relaxation remains engaging with one of @Poppenz poems from his 2004 book The late great BLACKBALL BRIDGE SONNETS.
@craigsisterson@PaddyWriter I know Carol Dawber is looking forward to meeting @PaddyWriter. I'll have to have a read of Carol's murder mysteries, Backtrack, Earthwork and Sounds Easy. The Wellington detective Doug Fisher and librarian Liz Gresham (the Miss Marples of Marlborough) sound like fine characters.
The festival modelled on the underground coal mine will seek work 'from the underground' which can be interpreted in many different ways eg that which has been forgotten or that which has become for a time, marginal or that which has deep roots in the earth or the past.
It is going to be an inspiring West Coast weekend of writers reading from their work and having conversations with the audience, which we hope you can be part of!
