Helen Whateley, daughter of a surgeon (father) and physician (mother), who attended private schools and then Oxford university,
"When I was younger, I worked as a waitress, I worked as a cleaner, I did all sorts, being a receptionist, they were not my dream job, but they were a way of earning some money"
My view: Whately’s work mattered, but presenting it as a moral lesson for young people is deeply disingenuous.
She was the daughter of two doctors, privately educated and Oxford-educated: a young person with a considerable safety net and exceptional access to opportunity.
Her experience of taking temporary jobs cannot be used to accuse today’s young people, facing scarce entry-level vacancies, insecure hours, unaffordable rents, ill health and far fewer routes into Europe, of laziness.
Anecdotes from a privileged starting point are no substitute for a serious plan to create decent opportunities.
Instead of cancelling the Triple Lock we should cancel the Tax Breaks for billionaires.
The Tax Breaks for just 150 people cost more than 10x as much as the Triple Lock.
Did you hear that?
15 Billionaires are costing as much as the Triple Lock, but you don't hear the Billionaire Media ranting about that...
The tax gap (total tax avoided and evaded) for the UK in 2023-20224 was £46,800,000,000.
It's not teachers or nurses avoiding tax.
It's not people on PIP.
It's not asylum seekers.
It's the rich. It's the billionaires. Its Nigel Farage. It's the Tories.
The Tories bought a snake-oil cure for NHS waiting lists from Palantir. Half the trusts using it got a longer queue and a bigger bill. We’re literally paying more to watch the waiting list get worse! Question is whether Labour will have the balls to bin it when the renewal’s due.
Since its foundation in 1824 the bravery of Royal National Lifeboat Institution volunteers has saved more than 146,700 lives at sea.
Hundreds of those volunteers have died attempting to save others. They are the best of us.
Any person or organisation questioning their actions or loyalty to this country should be corrected and ostracised.
Anyone can drown, but no one should.

In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy.
She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid.
The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.
She handed out the checks herself.
In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college.
When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months.
You've probably heard that part.
Here's the part you haven't:
The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top.
Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave.
She built her county an entire hospital.
She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it.
In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees.
Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal.
In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release.
And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it.
She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway.
She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did.
Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸

When I was living in South Korea a decade ago, there was an infamous incident involving an heiress to the family behind Korean Airlines. After getting into her first class seat, a steward handed her a bag of nuts. She immediately flipped out on him, as she thought the nuts should be warmed & served in a dish. She tried ejecting the steward from the plane, making such a scene that the flight was ultimately delayed 20 minutes. The incident became public, the media quickly dubbing it “Nutgate.” I remember when the heiress, Heather Cho, returned to Korea and apologized to the whole nation, hanging her head in shame (what you see below).
Cho ultimately resigned from one of her several executive positions at Korean Air & was subsequently found guilty in a South Korean court of obstructing aviation safety and given a twelve-month prison sentence, of which she served five months.
I bring this up because … I can’t shake the feeling her behavior wasn’t quite as bad as what we’re seeing in the Epstein Files.
It's the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. We're celebrating RD, who is a Graduate Future Payload Engineer for Airbus, our very own "rocket scientist". #WomenInScience
Sounds like good Peace plan, what do you think?🤫
1. Complete deoccupation of all territories.
2. Payment of reparations.
3. Punishment of those responsible for the outbreak of war, the genocide of Ukrainians and the commission of war crimes.
4. Demilitarized zone 500 km deep into russian territory.
@AnnelleSheline The recognition of the state of Israel by the UN was a breach of the UN charter because creation of a Jewish state on an already inhabited land *required* violations of human rights and breach of UN charter. So, it should be considered as a UN membership violation and void.
Remember Hind Rajab.
Just 6 years old. She sat for hours on the phone to paramedics with 6 murdered family members around her.
She told them “They are shooting at us. The tank is next to me.”
The Red Cross waited hours for Israel to permit them rescue her.
When the ambulance that was cleared to rescue arrived they executed the medics and then murdered her putting 355 bullets into the car she was in.
Her final words to paramedics and recorded were "I’m so scared, please come".
