BUILDING AFRICA’S NEXT GENERATION OF GLOBAL DIGITAL COMPANIES FROM NIGERIA
Nigeria has the talent, enterprise, and ambition to build companies that can compete anywhere in the world. Our responsibility as a government is to ensure that Nigerians do not have to leave Nigeria or rely on other jurisdictions to realise that potential.
For too long, some of our most promising young entrepreneurs have felt compelled to establish their companies and intellectual property abroad to access global capital and markets. I do not accept that this must remain the case.
I want the next generation of African technology, finance and service companies to be built, headquartered and scaled to the world from Nigerian soil.

Abuja, September 14, 2026 — J.P. Morgan, which manages the world's most widely tracked emerging market bond indices, has announced the inclusion of selected Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) Bonds in its newly introduced Government Bond Index–Emerging Markets Edge (GBI-EM Edge), a benchmark tracking local-currency government debt across frontier emerging markets.
The inclusion reflects the impact of the government's economic reforms, including the stabilisation of the naira, the clearance of the foreign exchange backlog, and broader improvements in GDP growth and inflation, which have strengthened investor confidence in Nigeria's domestic debt market.
𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚
Nigeria qualified on two key measures: liquidity, with FGN Bonds actively traded under a Two-Way Quote System, and issuance size, with outstanding volumes per tenor well above the USD 250 million minimum required for the GBI-EM Edge. Nigeria's weighting in the index is 7.40%, among the highest of the 26 markets covered and close to J.P. Morgan's 8% maximum country weighting.
This inclusion represents Nigeria's return to a J.P. Morgan benchmark for the first time in over a decade, following its exit from the GBI-EM Global Diversified index in 2015 amid foreign exchange liquidity constraints which the current reform agenda has directly addressed.
𝐀 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬
FGN Bonds were first included in the GBI-EM in 2012, a milestone that drew significant foreign investment into Nigeria's domestic securities market and reduced the cost of issuance by approximately 200 basis points. It also opened the equities market and banking sector to foreign capital and boosted external reserves.
𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭
The GBI-EM Edge tracks approximately $328 billion in local-currency government debt globally. Nigeria's 7.40% allocation represents roughly $17.47 billion of eligible FGN debt across 16 instruments. Index-tracking funds are expected to adjust their portfolios to reflect Nigeria's weighting, which should channel additional foreign portfolio inflows into the domestic bond market over time.
• 𝒀𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏: Increased foreign institutional demand is expected to support bond prices and gradually ease domestic yields, helping to moderate the government's cost of servicing naira-denominated debt.
• 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒚:
While the index covers mid-to-long-tenor government bonds specifically, improved liquidity in the FGN bond market is expected to have positive knock-on effects across the wider debt market, including Nigerian Treasury Bills, over time.

Today, the rewards I promised our D’Tigress have been fully redeemed.
Each player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official has received the equivalent of $50,000, completing their package of cash rewards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja.
For the first time, a Federal Government has fulfilled this scale of presidential sporting rewards in full within one year. We had to follow the processes required by law and ensure that every commitment was properly implemented. That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept.
We are also concluding the outstanding cash rewards for our Super Falcons.
The Super Falcons players and officials have already received the title documents to their house allocations and National Honours certificates. Likewise, the promise of houses and national honours I made to Super Eagles players has since been redeemed.
Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word.
My promise to every Nigerian Athelete is make NIGERIA proud, and come back to a grateful Nation.
Congratulations once again, our athletes. Nigeria is proud of you.

I chaired the Economic Management Team meeting earlier this week, where we approved the establishment of a committee to harmonise macroeconomic assumptions and projections used for economic planning across our fiscal and monetary institutions. This is designed to address a long-standing gap that has contributed to budget under-performance, and a key step toward stronger policy coordination and credible budget implementation.
We also reviewed the state of the economy: 4.43% real GDP growth in Q2 2026, about 17% growth in H1 2026 in US dollar terms, external reserves above $54 billion, an 18-year high, and Nigeria's reclassification to Frontier Market status by FTSE Russell among other major developments.
The Team critically assessed agriculture's role in our national development and the $1 trillion economy ambition. We also reviewed progress on hosting two international trade and investment events - CANEX 2026 and IATF 2027.
These milestones reflect our continued commitment to strengthening economic management, driving sustainable growth, attracting investment, and positioning Nigeria for greater competitiveness on the global stage.
The honourable ministers in attendance include Sen. Abubakar Kyari, CON — Honourable Minister, Agriculture and Food Security; Sen. Abubakar A. Bagudu, CON — Honourable Minister, Budget and Economic Planning; Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro — Honourable Minister, Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction; Dr. Jumoke Oduwole — Honourable Minister, Industry, Trade and Investment; Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo — Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas); and Hon. Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE — Honourable Minister, Regional Development. Other attendees include Permanent Secretaries Finance and Transportation, Dr. Tope Fasua — Special Adviser to the President (Economic Affairs) and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

I visited Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Abuja this week to chair the Board meeting, my first since becoming Finance Minister.
Before the meeting, I toured the facility to see recent investments in technology and intelligence. I commended the leadership and staff for notable progress on revenue generation and trade facilitation.
But progress should not lead to complacency. Results are precisely what should propel us to do more. I therefore charged the Service to set world-class benchmarks, backed by measurable outcomes that strengthen our regional and global competitiveness. Nigeria must lead through performance, not rhetoric:
• Port efficiency that eliminates bottlenecks
• End-to-end transparency across all operations
• Accelerated cargo clearance timelines
• Uncompromising integrity in revenue collection
The Federal Government remains committed to equipping Customs with the technology, tools, and policy support needed to do more. I urged every officer to see themselves not just as border administrators, but as frontline drivers of Nigeria's economic growth and global competitiveness.
THE RENEWED HOPE AGENDA IS WORKING
Fellow Nigerians,
Our economy grew by 4.43% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 4.23% in the same period last year.
Growth was recorded across agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services, which now make the largest contribution to our GDP.
In nominal terms, our GDP reached ₦119.27 trillion, up 18.43% from ₦100.7 trillion in the same period last year.
These numbers matter because they show where our economy is going after three years of difficult but necessary reforms.
OPERATION HADIN KAI RECORDS UNPRECEDENTED 202 PERCENT WEEK-ON-WEEK SURGE IN TERRORIST SURRENDERS
The Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has recorded an unprecedented 202 percent week-on-week increase in terrorist surrenders, rising from over 50 terrorist commanders, fighters and affiliates in the previous week to over 150 in the current week.
The significant surge reflects the cumulative impact of sustained intelligence-led operations, intensified military pressure and coordinated kinetic and non-kinetic efforts aimed at degrading terrorist capabilities and encouraging voluntary disengagement from terrorism. The development is also an indicator of growing pressure within terrorist formations, particularly on their freedom of movement, logistics, sustainment and ability to retain personnel within their enclaves.
The recovery of weapons and ammunition from some of the surrendering elements further underscores the operational impact of sustained military pressure on terrorist networks. The surge also highlights the effectiveness of OPHK’s comprehensive counter-insurgency approach, which combines intelligence-led operations, strategic communication, civil-military engagement and other non-kinetic measures to disrupt terrorist activities and support networks.
Strategic communication remains central to the effort, conveying credible messages to those willing to abandon terrorism while highlighting the consequences of continued association with terrorist groups. All persons who surrender are profiled, documented and handled in accordance with established procedures and applicable laws.
The Military High Command commended troops for their resilience, discipline and operational effectiveness, urging them to sustain the momentum and continue denying terrorist elements freedom of action across the Theatre.
IN HONOUR OF SIS 10 FALLEN HEROES
Yesterday, ten brave officers of the Nigeria Police Special Intelligence Squad (SIS) made the ultimate sacrifice while defending a village in Kebbi State from an advancing force of more than 200 terrorists.
They knew they were heavily outnumbered, yet they refused to retreat. They stood between the attackers and the innocent civilians they had sworn to protect. With extraordinary courage and selflessness, they fought to the very end, giving their lives so that others might live.
Ten officers went into battle and did not return home to their families. Behind each uniform was a father, son, husband, brother, or loved one whose life was cut tragically short in the line of duty.
Their sacrifice is a painful reminder of the courage demanded of those who stand on the frontlines to protect our communities. May their families find strength in knowing that their loved ones gave everything in service to their nation.
May their souls rest in eternal peace. Their courage will not be forgotten.
TROOPS ARREST FLEEING KIDNAPPING SYNDICATE COMMANDER, RECOVER FOUR AK-47 RIFLES IN ENUGU
Troops of the 82 Division/Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have arrested a notorious kidnapping syndicate commander and recovered four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition in Enugu State. The operation followed sustained intelligence-led efforts to dismantle a criminal syndicate linked to the abduction of two persons in Udi Local Government Area of the state on August 2, 2026.
According to the Army, troops had earlier neutralised one member of the syndicate and arrested another suspect. Intelligence obtained during the subsequent interrogation led security operatives to identify the fleeing commander and locate the group’s concealed weapons cache. Acting on the intelligence, troops intensified the manhunt and tracked down the syndicate commander in the Gariki General Area of Enugu as he attempted to flee the state. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is allegedly linked to several kidnapping operations across the South East and North Central regions. Items recovered from him included US$1,000, ₦785,900 in cash and other incriminating materials.
Further exploitation of intelligence from the arrested suspects led troops to Umuchingu Ujenike Forest, where members of the syndicate had reportedly concealed their weapons. A follow-up operation at the forest hideout resulted in the recovery of four AK-47 rifles, seven AK-47 magazines and 133 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.
The Army said the operation underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-driven joint operations in disrupting organised criminal networks, apprehending fleeing suspects and denying criminal elements access to weapons and safe havens. The arrested syndicate commander is currently undergoing further interrogation, with security operatives expected to use the information obtained to track down other members of the network and their collaborators.
Military Precision Airstrike Destroys Terrorist Hideout in Borno
By TheRadarNewsNG
The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI has destroyed a suspected terrorist hideout and neutralised its occupants during a precision airstrike in Borno State. Intelligence sources told TheRadarNewsNG that the strike was carried out in the early hours of July 20 after intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) assets detected suspicious terrorist activity around KLA Balia in the Lake Chad region.
An ISR platform, codenamed GUARDIAN, established surveillance over the area at about 5:35 a.m. and confirmed the target before the aircraft executed a precision strike. A Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) confirmed the hideout was completely destroyed and engulfed in flames, with all suspected terrorists inside believed to have been neutralised.
Military sources said the operation is part of ongoing air interdiction efforts to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and restrict insurgent movement across the North-East.
A New Approach to the Fight Against Insecurity: Commendations to the DSS and Other Intelligence Agencies
By David Akoji
The recent safe rescue of the kidnapped teachers and pupils from Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State offers Nigerians renewed hope that the country’s security architecture is evolving beyond conventional methods. While many security successes often remain unknown to the public, this operation has provided a rare glimpse into the power of intelligence led policing and inter-agency collaboration.
For years, the fight against kidnapping has largely been viewed through the lens of armed confrontation. Although military strength remains indispensable, the Orire operation demonstrates that intelligence, strategic planning, patience, and psychological operations can be equally decisive in securing victory against criminal elements.
Reports surrounding the operation suggest that it was not a routine rescue mission but a carefully coordinated intelligence exercise. Rather than relying solely on force, security agencies reportedly invested weeks in gathering actionable intelligence, identifying the criminal network, tracking individuals connected to the kidnappers across several states, and carefully studying their operational structure.
This approach reflects a growing understanding that modern security threats require modern responses. Criminal networks thrive on secrecy, mobility and psychological advantage. Defeating them therefore demands superior intelligence, meticulous coordination and strategic thinking.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the operation was the apparent shift in psychological advantage. According to available accounts, once security agencies identified and secured relatives of members of the kidnapping network, the kidnappers reportedly realised that they no longer controlled the situation. Their confidence diminished as they faced increasing pressure from within their own circles. Appeals from family members reportedly encouraged the release of the innocent victims, demonstrating how intelligence can sometimes achieve what sustained confrontation may struggle to accomplish.
This is an important lesson in contemporary security management. Successful counter kidnapping operations are not always won on the battlefield. Many are won through painstaking intelligence gathering, patient surveillance, careful analysis and coordinated decision making long before the public becomes aware that an operation is underway.
Such outcomes deserve commendation.
The Department of State Services, the intelligence community, the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies continue to operate under extremely difficult conditions. Their successes are frequently overshadowed by the unfortunate incidents that naturally attract greater public attention. Yet operations such as the Orire rescue remind us that significant victories are being recorded through professionalism, collaboration and improved intelligence capabilities.
Special recognition goes to Mr Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, DG of the Department of State Services commendations should also be extended to Gen Christopher Musa Rtd, Minister of Defence and Nuhu Ribadu NSA for the coordination efforts within Nigeria’s national security framework. The Office of the National Security Adviser has consistently emphasized intelligence driven responses to emerging security threats, and operations of this nature reinforce the value of that strategic direction.
Equally deserving of appreciation are the numerous intelligence officers whose names may never appear in newspapers or television reports. Their work is largely invisible, often requiring months of surveillance, analysis, infiltration and coordination before tangible results emerge. Their sacrifices contribute immensely to national security.
