@NIMBYSlayer_69 My impression is that this is more true for undergraduate level than graduate. At graduate level you're more responsible for managing your education, regardless of where you study, making the differences smaller.
@TogoresMTG Possibly a hot take but it's crazy to me that removal is available all 5 colors, with 2 colors having premium removal, while counters are basically only available in 1 color. Premium counters in other colors could make blue less dominant in eternal formats which imo is a net good
@ViewerAnon 6 is impressive. I went at 8 am and it was great honestly. Normally just durdle away my weekend morning. Loved watching a whole movie and still being home before lunch, the rest of the day ahead of me.
Ok, fine, I'll bullpost about the Odyssey, and piss off the traditionalists.
One of the inspired ahistorical castings was Travis Scott as the Homeric bard, who recites the opening lines of the actual Odyssey in one of the banquet scenes.
The Homeric epics existed for centuries without being written down, and were recited from memory in just such banquet scenes by skilled raconteurs who used meter and fixed epithets ("swift-footed Achilles") as rhetorical mnemonics to verbally re-enact long streams of poetry.
Poetry existed mostly because humans can better remember language in sing-songy melodies. There was no other form of literate culture but sung poetry and live theater for centuries; the novel would have to wait for the printing press to appear, as there was no way for a human to remember hundreds of pages of unrhymed text.
The Greeks only wrote any of this down after their adoption of the Phoenician alphabet in the 7th century, and the start of the Classical era in the 5th century, many centuries after the events recounted. This debate is the 'Homeric' question that scholars like Milman Parry kicked off in the early 20th century, and Albert Bates Lord mostly settled by cataloging how similar epic poetry was kept alive in the Balkans via bard-like recitations (which can keep an oral work remarkably consistent through time).
Anyhow, back to Nolan. Putting a modern-day rapper in the place of the bard is a very exact recasting: rap culture is about the only piece of living oral culture left in post-textual modernity. The rapper of today is the precise analog of that bard of ancient Greece, even if rap itself is not the totality of literary culture now as poetry was then. This, like several other scenes in the film, is a clever modern recasting of a dusty classic.
“Our age of bronze is collapsing.”
“Oh no great Odysseus, what’s the cause?”
“Don’t be reductionist, Eurylochus. There’s no single cause. Persistent stressors on the palace economies, seismic activity, migration, disruption to the tin trade…”
@ContraPoints Agree that the soundscape was intense but at least the clanging served a purpose this time. The clangs was mimicking the beats of the storyteller, bringing the rhythm of the original verse poem into the movie.
Sorry, folks. You can’t fully grasp the Odyssey by seeing a film version! You also can’t comprehend it by reading it in a book. You have to hear it sung by a bard in dactylic hexameter while in such an ecstatic state of drunkenness, you channel the Muse and add your own lines.
