I still remember the first day of my orientation as an intern doctor so vividly.

The interns coordinator told us these words: ‘AS AN INTERN DOCTOR, YOU GO FOR A SHORT CALL AT YOUR OWN RISK.’

Who can forget these words. Imagine the immense responsibility!

It haunted me. And truthfully, everytime I went for a short call, I would be praying that nothing happens to any patient in my short absentia.

See, if you’re going to put someone’s child, girlfriend, boyfriend, mother, father, husband, or wife under such immense pressure, you had better pay them!

The policy makers noticed a state of limbo between the completion of medical school, and deployment for internship, especially in the face of limited capacity of training facilities.
Their solution: Make internship a requirement for graduation (not just licensure), and put Pre-internship exams to bar a few more students from deployment.
A internship that will not be paid, while the students slave away for a year.
