Dr. Walid Khalidi has passed away.

He is one of the greatest historians of Palestine and the Palestinians of all time.

I am personally greatly indebted to Dr. Khalidi. Many years ago, he was kind enough to meet me for a coffee in Beirut. He asked me what I was writing my ph.d dissertation on, and I told him I was debating between a study of the famine in Syria and Palestine during WW1 and a history of the idea of Palestine.

He told me I would be an idiot if I wrote about WWI. Alas, I wrote my dissertation about Palestine, and it was probably that comment from Dr. Khalidi that was the dealbreaker.
