The premise is the things that really hurt you and that really kill you are foolishness, pride, selfishness, hardness of heart, denial of your flaws and weaknesses, and the belief that you don't need God. Those are the only things that can hurt you in the long run. Those are the only things that can hurt you in the totality of your life. In the short run, selfishness feels great. In the long run, it'll destroy you. In the short run, self-deception is wonderful, by the way.
We all know that. In the short run, just closing your eyes is great. In the long run, it kills you.
