It’s wild seeing the cycle repeat itself with Ravyn Lenae. In the ’60s, some Black radio programmers claimed Dionne Warwick sounded ‘too white’ for their stations. In the ’70s, Jamaica Kincaid described Diana Ross in The Village Voice as ‘the last of the black white girls,’ saying she’d been coded as acceptable because she could ‘master being white’ without embarrassment. Decade after decade, Black women get boxed in by narrow ideas of what they’re allowed to sound like or be.
I love this loud ass song.
"AIN'T NO PROBLEM, YOU CAN GO
I WILL FIND SOMEBODY ELSE
IT'S ALRIGHT, I'LL MOVE ALONG
YOU GOT THE GREEN LIGHT, SO YOU CAN GO
GO, GO, GO OH WHOA OH (red light, green light)"🗣️
