More than 400 elderly residents from the yeronga retirement village in brisbane have been told to pack a bag, empty their fridges and wade through water as evacuation efforts get underway. Residents at the Regis aged care facility will also have to move. @abcbrisbane
@Anne_OKeeffe@abcbrisbane Thanks Ann - I did get dad out thanks to the army. But am back today cleaning out the fridge as he hadn’t done it before he left. I hope your uncle is ok. What chaos. These facilities should have better plans and should never be built in flood areas. Hope you’re well.
Thanks to the army for rescuing my dad from his retirement village at yeronga. It lost power in floodwaters. Still many residents in the facility which has no working lifts with residents - many with wheelie walkers - having to climb five stories to get to their unit.
@kellyhd@WitchsmellerP@abcbrisbane Only dementia residents being evacuated at Regis Aged Care. Still about 400 people in the adjoining retirement village with no power who are stranded. An evacuation may happen tomorrow but they don’t know how it will happen
@Anne_OKeeffe@abcbrisbane Apparently they don’t know how to get everyone out. So they’re staying another night. Community bbq at 4pm. Hope to evacuate somehow tomorrow
@Anne_OKeeffe@abcbrisbane Ia bbq has been organised for 4pm. My 92 year father has to walk down five flights of a fire well to get downstairs. It can’t go on much longer. They need to get out tomorrow
@Anne_OKeeffe@abcbrisbane Do you know when the residents from the village will be evacuated I am trying to pick so@w of the residents up to stay at our place but not sure when required. Thanks for your help
@Anne_OKeeffe@abcbrisbane The meeting is just over. The plan now is to have residents stay one more night before evacuating as they don’t know how to get everyone out of the facility. Many residents seem happy to stay one more night - but there is no power for phones or fridges .
@WeAreBrisbane@abcbrisbane I don’t know as yet. I’m unable to get to my dad when he is evacuated from the facility. Just waiting to see when it’s going to happen. A meeting is underway
@Anne_OKeeffe@abcbrisbane A meeting is underway at the village yeronga Re the evacuation. There is no power there with 400 elderly residents. Not sure where they are planning on sending them to as many need help and some have no family
They have no power at the village and many residents are on wheelie walkers and are frail. Family and friends struggling to contact the residents as they’ve had no power to charge mobile phones. A disaster unfolding
@MarkBaileyMP@CrNicJ @bne_lordmayor Thanks for the update. My 92 year old dad is there and I’m worried with no power at The Village as to how he will get on - particularly as I can’t get there to help him.
