At Vilnius Summit in 2013, Ukrainian President Yanukovych refused to sign EU association agreement.

He came and said that Russia was threatening economic sanctions, and that they would lose billions of dollars if they moved further toward Europe.

We talked to him, and Germany and Merkel agreed that we would find these additional billions from European budget to cover sanctions from Russian side.

Then he again said: "No, I cannot sign." And it was clear that he was frightened and under personal pressure, even facing physical threats.

So it was clear. And for all of us, it was a surprise, it was upsetting for all of Ukraine, and because of that, Maidan appeared.

Latvian authorities have stopped operations at the last remaining checkpoint, Paternieki–Grigorovshchina, amid a worsening situation with illegal migration in the border area.

Latvia has become the main target of migration attacks by the Lukashenko regime.

Since the beginning of 2026, Latvian border guards have prevented more than 9,000 attempts by third-country migrants to illegally cross from Belarus (for comparison: fewer than 1,000 cases in Lithuania and about 260 in Poland).

Earlier, in September 2023, Latvia had already closed another key checkpoint due to the migration crisis.

Authorities have urged Latvian citizens to refrain from traveling to Belarus and for those currently there to return home.
