Hi! I'm Andre, a character designer and illustrator. If you're interested in what I make and do, check out my Linktree to see more! https://t.co/r9pxijRXrj
"Obscure your intentions." - The Orchid Mantis #creaturecomfortsoracledeck
Many mantids camouflage as vegetation like wood, leaves and flowers to hide from predators and ambush prey. Mantises also exhibit cannibalism on their own young, and even their mates when under stress.
"Go back to your roots." - The Sockeye Salmon #creaturecomfortsoracledeck After spending their adult lives in the ocean, salmon return to their spawns upriver to breed. These migrations, called runs, feed many predator species and make salmon keystones in their ecoystem.
"Wait for your reward." - The Komodo Dragon #creaturecomfortsoracledeck
The dragon bites, and most prey die within 30 mins. But for the ones that escape, they die to sepsis and other infections due to the venomous bite. The blood trail will lead the dragon to a nice meal.
When not under extreme conditions, their suspended form can survive for over 30 years and resurrect with a just few drops of water, where they continue their simple life of squirming around and digesting detritus.
where they expel the water from their bodies and suspend their metabolism, their body is able to withstand nearly anything for short periods of time: severe temperatures, high impacts, radiation levels 1000 times higher than most animals, and even exposure to the vacuum of space!
They also protect each other: the rhino can scare away smaller carnivores for the oxpecker, while the oxpecker makes up for the rhino's poor vision by acting as a lookout for larger predators, including preventing human poachers 40-50% of the time (2020 study by Current Biology).
"Contrast builds strong bonds." - The Black Rhinoceros and Yellow-Billed Oxpecker #creaturecomfortsoracledeck
This is the first card of a new project I'm building up! Stay tuned for more art and fun facts :)
Despite being vastly different creatures, these species provide for each other in a symbiotic relationship. The oxpeckers feed on ticks and other parasites embedded in the folds of the rhinoceros's skin, which grants the rhino relief and feeds the oxpeckers.
