@jimpjorps@parismarx @SilvermanJacob I push back in the ways that I can, spend very little on material goods and buy used whenever possible. Just hard to see a future where the web remains free, as it was only free to get us here. Now that we’re here, how do we sustain?
@Toddgs @n0ctilucent@parismarx @SilvermanJacob Yes true. I just don’t see things sustaining on a pure advertising model (can already see it, increased ads, more paid tiers). But can definitely see some very troubling possibilities with blockchain as well
@n0ctilucent@parismarx @SilvermanJacob No but it removes a lot of friction i.e. setting up accounts, adding credit card to each service etc.. again I’m NOT saying this is the solution, but it is interesting to think of possibilities!
@Toddgs @n0ctilucent@parismarx @SilvermanJacob Data becomes less valuable when it isn’t needed for targeted advertisements. Ideally platforms would have access to less of it as well, since you wouldn’t need to supply email etc to use it
@olmaverick@n0ctilucent@parismarx @SilvermanJacob That’s why I said proportional, if it were fractions of a cent per interaction, that’s pretty inclusive. I have no idea if that’s possible though… I’m not a web3 evangelist, but I think it’s an interesting development in how to sustain this tech we’re increasingly dependent on
@n0ctilucent@parismarx @SilvermanJacob I do understand that. The current model pays for it by selling our data and bombarding us with targeted advertisements. If the cost was proportional (fractions of a cent per interaction) then it could lead to accessible platforms that don’t rely on ads
