The city’s financial advisory committee finalized its budget recommendations BEFORE the vote.
Commissioners received them SIX DAYS AFTER approving the budget.
Nothing says transparency quite like getting the warnings after the decision.

Municipal malpractice @CityofMiami.
Who will be held accountable for hiding important financial information from City Commissioners before an important budget vote?
Another great article by David Villano at the Coconut Grove Spotlight.
Miami approved a $3.7 billion budget in under an hour. Most spend longer deciding what to watch on Netflix (we’re not judging).
So we opened the books. Where does the money go? Why are taxpayers now funding a lawsuit against the county?

Mayor Higgins campaigned on doing a "deep dive" into Miami's budget, but one of her first moves is to grow her own office's budget. That's not a deep dive; that's business as usual.
Budget hearing tonight. Time to ask the questions.

No truth in advertising from #Miami.
Received this mailer promoting the Mayor’s bond vote
-doesn’t mention the $450MM cost of generational debt
-doesn’t mention promised budget “deep dive”
-doesn’t mention true cost could be $795MM
Vote NO on Miami Referendum 1.

"This is a death blow to the already skeletonized Miami Herald, once one of the country's top newspapers. I worked there for over 40 yrs, and I feel heartsick for the talented journalists who've been gutting it out while McClatchy blithely keeps swinging the axe. By the time the company is finished, all the reporters left standing will fit in a phone booth and millions of readers in South Florida will be forced to scrounge for actual, true local news on the always-reliable internet. It's tragic, but there's a lesson here: If you own a newspaper company, don't sell it to a hedge fund unless you truly don't give a shit about your readers."—Carl Hiassen https://t.co/gJSYruIsa8
Miami civil rights legend Dr. Marvin Dunn speaks out about Mayor Eileen Higgins' betrayal of Black voters who overwhelmingly supported her in last year's election.
Dr. Dunn endorsed and campaigned for Higgins and now feels his "high hopes" have been dashed after she:
* celebrated her first Black History Month as mayor by firing every Black employee in the mayor's office;
*removed Christine King from her position as the first Black female chair of the city commission;
*reassigned 26-year city hall veteran Quatisha Oguntoyinbo-Rashad from her leadership position at the Environmental Resources Division (Tree Protection);
*and successfully lobbied against a $25 million federal grant to help Miami's historic Black Overtown neighborhood.
Dunn is a prominent longtime Miami historian, author, civil rights activist and Florida International University professor emeritus who has dedicated his life to documenting and teaching Florida's African American history.
Miami City Hall’s greatest magic trick isn’t turning a real estate boom into record tax revenue.
It’s collecting 128% more in property taxes, nearly doubling the General Fund, & still having the audacity to pass the hat around asking taxpayers for another $450 million.

There are moments when you meet someone who seems to have it all figured out. Roger had a rare combination: placid outlook coupled w/ a fierceness to enjoy every facet of life. He never sweat the small stuff cause long as your hearts beating its all small stuff. You’ll be missed.
My family and I are devastated at the 7 deaths in a helicopter crash in #Kenya
We knew four of them personally, related to one.
They were kind, decent, accomplished professionals in their prime. Gone too soon.
Stunned and sad beyond words.
Their memory will be a blessing.
