Legalising assisted dying in England and Wales ‘may hamper suicide prevention work’, says the government’s suicide prevention adviser.
Important story from @jessicaelgot: https://t.co/D5f31o9C9S
"Women are being killed at a much higher rate than men".
Chelsea Roff says that in those jurisdictions where the law was expanded to permit assisted suicide/euthanasia on the basis of psychiatric condition, it is estimated that between 69% and 77% of people dying this way are women.😱
Important story in today’s Observer - @centreWJ & others how legalising assisted dying will put at risk women in coercively controlling & abusive relationships. It’s depressing how little consideration this has been given by MPs so far.
BREAKING: Leadbeater Bill Committee shockingly rejects @RachaelMaskell MP amendment that would require someone to have a consultation about palliative care options before being able to have an assisted suicide. This would have assisted some to live.
Juliet Campbell MP (@JOCampbellMP): If we were to introduce a palliative care specialist, we would then guarantee that everybody was given the same advice and information, which would reduce those health inequalities and inequalities to accessing information that we know exist in our healthcare system.
LEADBEATER COMMITTEE LATEST: The Committee has rejected all 86 amendments to Clause 1 of the assisted suicide Bill relating to the definition of “assisted dying”. Every single proposed safeguard has been rejected. Danny Kruger (@danny__kruger MP) shines light on what this means.
Some members of the public support the Bill because they think it's safe... but every amendment to make it safer has so far been rejected by supporters of the Bill. If you meet the 6-month requirement and are regarded as having capacity, you can end your life under this Bill:
- if you are depressed and suicidal.
- if you are marginalised, a prisoner or homeless.
- if you have been influenced or encouraged to assisted suicide.
- if you feel you are a burden.
- if you are not in pain.
- if you are doing so to save your family money.
