English is an ethnicity. British, like Nigerian, is a nationality that includes multiple ethnicities. If you’re English and you move to Nigeria and get citizenship you can be Nigerian. What you can’t be is Yoruba or Hausa or Igbo, because those are ethnicities, as are English, Scottish and Welsh. In some countries they use the same word for the main ethnic group as they do for the nationality, and so it may be necessary to say “ethnically French” for example. But the UK, like the US, has long had a word for the nationality that includes multiple ethnicities. That word is British, not English.
