anyone talking about their custom setups to make ai more effective isn't doing anything useful

coding used to be manual labor. typing the code out, doing large changes, jumping between files. a fancy, bespoke setup could make a difference

but it's not like that anymore, you have a magic box you can say stuff into and things happen

people haven't understood this, they're still spending their energy tinkering with what's behind the box. the underlying tone is always frustration. they're clearly not happy and maybe even on a burn out path

the best people at this are doing the best work of their life all while happier than ever they could do this even on a vanilla setup

the box can already do amazing things. it can even produce the best code of your life. it's limited entirely by the person using it and their creativity and their ambition

and you're not gonna get that in a skill file

The agent can produce code fast, but it still needs direction, taste, and clear constraints.

This weekend should put an end to the fantasy that frontier AI will remain some neutral global utility, available to everyone on equal terms forever..

The countries that control frontier AI will use that control. The companies that own frontier AI will act in their own interests. And the nations that depend on them will eventually learn what dependence costs.

Britain has been far too polite about this. We keep pretending that access is the same thing as capability. It is not. Access is something you are granted. Capability is something you own.

Nobody is going to hand Britain strategic advantage out of goodwill. Not allies. Not suppliers. Not hyperscalers. Not model labs. Everyone is playing for their own national and commercial interest.

A serious country does not outsource its defence base, its intelligence capability, its energy security or its critical infrastructure. AI now belongs on that list.

The UK needs to stop acting like being a customer is good enough.

Customers wait for permission.
Owners set the rules.

In an age of slop AI content everywhere, doing >> consuming:

@simonw From what I can see llms need a lot more hand holding in inconsistent (usually legacy) code bases. I think consistency and good design are likely the real difference not the age of the code base
