Today is Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Day. We thank everyone who is truly strengthening Ukraine’s defense in this war, providing our country with the intelligence it needs, and carrying out operations that prevent Russia from achieving its goals. The Defense Intelligence personnel, with their strength and professionalism, alongside all the other warriors of Ukraine’s Defense Forces, have defended Kyiv, liberated Snake Island, and conducted hundreds of other defensive operations that Ukraine needs – both on our territory and behind enemy lines.

And we will remember all our intelligence officers who were killed while carrying out combat missions. We honor the memory of every fallen hero. And I thank everyone who has continued the mission of their fallen brothers and sisters-in-arms and works every day for Ukraine’s security and independence.

Everyone understands that the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine is a strong organization with its own history and brotherhood. Your strength is the knowledge Ukraine gains about the enemy, about its plans, and about the overall situation around Ukraine. Your history is the defense of Ukraine and the role intelligence officers have played in the key battles of this war. And your brotherhood – all of us in Ukraine must always value the fact that Ukrainians have become true brothers-in-arms in this war.

Today, I honored our warriors with state awards on the occasion of Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Day. Everyone has, in one way or another, used information gathered by military intelligence. In one way or another, our warriors from different branches of Ukraine’s Defense and Security Forces have fought and continue to fight alongside one another – shoulder to shoulder. And that is how it must remain. Brotherhood within each branch of Ukraine’s Defense and Security Forces is part of what unites our entire society. Ukrainians win when they support one another. Thank you for this approach. May the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine always remain strong.

Ukraine is a country of peace. And we truly respect the fact that our partners want to help bring this war to an end. We support every such effort. When the Americans asked us to pause strikes on Moscow and St. Petersburg on August 25, 26, and 27, we observed that pause. There were no strikes on Russia, while strikes on Ukraine continued. When another global power asked us to pause strikes in the direction of Vladivostok for a specified period of time, we agreed to ensure that as well. New meetings in Moscow are now being prepared, and we will take that into account.

We always support every step toward peace – every step to prevent Russia from making this war endless. The war needs to end, and leaders are right to tell Putin this. So, for the sake of diplomacy and negotiations, whenever our partners approach us about this, we will ensure that Russian skies are cleared of drones for specified periods of time and along specified routes. Safety will return to Russia’s skies when there is real movement toward peace. For now, the skies over Russia are for drones – not for civilian aviation.

Efforts to deal with the aftermath of Russia’s attack on our regions have been underway since last night. It was a combined strike – drones and ballistic missiles. The Russians struck critical infrastructure in the Poltava, Sumy, and Kherson regions. In the Kharkiv region, they struck residential buildings. In Kramatorsk, a guided aerial bomb hit a high-rise building. Four people were rescued by the State Emergency Service units. Three people were injured in Zaporizhzhia, and two in Kryvyi Rih. An apartment building was struck in Odesa. In Chubynske, Kyiv region, all the necessary emergency services are involved in putting out fires at enterprises following the drone strikes.

Russia continues to invest in missiles and in expanding its war, and that means more countermeasures are needed. This week, our European allies made important decisions to strengthen Ukrainian air defense. It is important that these are also supplemented by additional ballistic missile defense packages, first and foremost through PURL. Everything that strengthens the protection of our skies effectively saves the lives of Ukrainians every day. To bring down Russia’s desire to keep fighting, we need to effectively bring down the missiles Moscow clings to so much to keep the war going. I am grateful to everyone who understands this and helps.

We regained the right to live in our own state, speak our own language, preserve our culture, and determine our own future.

It is up to us—not the enemy—to decide what Ukraine will be tomorrow. This is what we are fighting for today. For our home, our families and loved ones, our children and future generations. For our values. For the opportunity to live in a free Ukraine.

Thank you to our warriors. To everyone who is serving today, holding the front line, defending their positions, and carrying out combat operations. We must remember: our missions must be successfully completed, and our warriors must return home alive.

Russia brought war to our land. Therefore, its military machine, its military facilities, and all facilities that enable its aggression will continue to be targeted by our strikes.

Thank you to everyone who, in their own place, is making Ukraine stronger.

We bow our heads before everyone who gave their life for Ukraine, and we will honor their memory by being worthy of their sacrifice.

We are doing everything to ensure that our State always remains free.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s independence, I presented state awards to our warriors and civilians. I handed the awards to the families of those who were honored posthumously. I also presented battle flags and ribbons of the honorary distinction “For Courage and Bravery” to military units.

Among those honored posthumously were Junior Lieutenant Nazarii Hryntsevych (“Grenka”), head of the Platsdarm search organization Oleksii Yukov, and school student Stepan Chubenko, who was killed by Russian militants.

I also honored shooting champion Olena Kostevych, Bishop Vitalii Kryvytskyi, Superhumans CEO Olga Rudnieva, artist Anatoly Kryvolap, and singer Zlata Ognevich.

I want to thank each and every person who makes a personal contribution to ensuring that Ukraine not only preserves but steadily strengthens its independence. Thank you for being there for Ukraine and for making our country proud of you.

And I ask that we honor the memory of those of our people who, defending Ukraine, defending our blue-and-yellow colors, and defending our independence, gave their lives. Gave their lives so that Ukraine could live.
