Construction has begun in Azerbaijan on power transmission lines intended to connect Nakhichevan to the country’s main energy system via the so-called “Zangezur Corridor,” according to local media reports citing AzerEnergy.

The company says it is building two high-voltage transmission lines with a capacity of 1,000 MW: one running from occupied Jrakaan to Kovsakan with a length of 74 km, and another from Nakhijevan to Ordubad spanning 105 km. The project also includes the construction of a 44-kilometer transmission line along the route Azerbaijan refers to as the so-called “Zangezur Corridor.”

AzerEnergy presents the initiative as part of a broader plan to establish an international energy corridor linking Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Europe. As part of this plan, the construction of a 230-kilometer transmission line from Nakhijevan to Turkey is envisaged.

The developments come amid earlier statements by Nikol Pashinyan, who publicly spoke about the possible unification of the Armenian and Azerbaijani energy systems. His remarks sparked criticism in Armenia, with opponents warning that such integration could undermine Armenia’s energy sovereignty in the context of ongoing political and security pressure from Azerbaijan.
