Born in Obosi, Anambra State in 1933, Chief Eleazar Chukwuemeka Anyaoku became the first Black African to lead the Commonwealth of Nations, a body spanning 54 countries across every continent on earth.

He joined the Commonwealth Secretariat in 1966, rose to Deputy Secretary General by 1977 and was elected Secretary General in 1989. He served until 2000.

During his tenure he made dismantling apartheid in South Africa a central mission, building relationships with the African National Congress at a time when they were still a banned organisation.

On retirement, the University of London established a professorial chair named after him at its Institute of Commonwealth Studies. Back home he holds the traditional title Ichie Adazie of Obosi.

An Igbo man from Anambra sat at the table where empires once made decisions. And he belonged there completely.
