Picture reaching for something on a high shelf and coming up short. You don’t give up; instead, you find a stool, carry it over, and climb up. Buried in that action is something remarkable: You held the goal in your mind, identified what you needed, and executed a plan. No training required.
A study suggests bumble bees can do the same—the first demonstration of this kind of goal-directed problem-solving in an insect.

🇵🇱🇨🇿 One of the biggest stories of Roland Garros 2026 has a surprisingly strong Czech connection.
While Maja Chwalińska's run from qualifying to the final shocked the tennis world, two Czech figures have played a key role behind the scenes: coach Jaroslav Machovský and former player Petr Hájek.
Machovský began working with Chwalińska in 2020 and remained by her side through the toughest period of her life. The Polish star battled depression, burnout and a complete loss of confidence, at one point admitting she could barely leave her home and wasn't sure she would ever return to tennis. Their partnership survived it all.
The Czech coach saw something special from the beginning. Looking back on their first meetings, Machovský said Chwalińska played too slowly, but "had something in her" and possessed clear potential. According to him, the strengths now admired by fans - heavy topspin forehand, touch, reflexes and feel for the game - were always there. The challenge was developing them properly.
Their relationship has grown far beyond coach and player. Chwalińska says that after six years together it feels more like a father-daughter bond. She credits Machovský with bringing calmness and stability to her career, qualities that became crucial during her incredible Paris run.
Another Czech in her camp is former professional player Petr Hájek, who has worked alongside the team during her rise. Together with Machovský, he forms part of the Czech influence behind one of the most unexpected Grand Slam stories of recent years.
From depression and uncertainty to a Roland Garros final. Chwalińska's breakthrough is a Polish fairytale, but it also carries a significant Czech footprint.
