The Mediterranean Sea is heading into uncharted territory. The recent powerful “heat dome” over southern Europe has led to an extremely rapid warming of the waters in the western part of the bassin, with SSTs now exceeding 30°C off the coast of southern Italy.

NEW: 85 people in Arizona suffered severe burns from contact with pavements heated up to 180F (82C). 7 of them died. In total, 257 people had underlying cause of death listed as "exposure to excessive natural heat".
