Why Ron left in Deathly Hallows
I see people, especially Ron haters, reduce Ron leaving to “he was hungry,” “he was cold,” or “he wanted to spend Christmas with his family.”
That completely ignores what he was actually going through.
First, Ron was physically in terrible shape. Hermione’s side-along Apparition injured his arm, he had lost a lot of blood, and he was already in worse physical condition than Harry and Hermione.
Then there was his family. Ron was the only one whose entire family was still out there, and he had no idea whether they were alive or dead. Hermione’s parents were in Australia. Harry’s parents were dead. Ron was constantly worrying about his family while they were all in danger.
Then there was the Horcrux. The locket was affecting all three of them, but Ron’s low self-esteem made him especially vulnerable to what it was showing him.
And during the argument, Harry literally told him to leave twice and mocked him for being worried about his family.
Ron admitted almost immediately that he regretted leaving. He tried to come back, but a group of Snatchers caught him, and by the time he managed to deceive them and return, Harry and Hermione were already gone.
I'm not saying Ron was right to leave.
He made a mistake.
But I will never hate a 17-year-old who was physically weakened, terrified about his family, being manipulated by a Horcrux and pushed into a heated argument.
Especially when he spent the rest of the story trying to make up for it.
He saved Harry's life. He destroyed the Horcrux. He helped save Hermione at Malfoy Manor.
Ron made a mistake. Then he did everything he could to make it right.
I think that's worth remembering.
The fact that this is even a question is insane to me. It's clearly a movie thing, so I kind of get why it happened, but Snape is a horrible person. Like one of the worst. James was a dick to him, but that wasn't a one sided issue. It was a mutual hatred and Snape would do the same sorts of things to James and his friends. Even Lily, who constantly defended Snape, was well aware of this. Snape and his friends did the same exact thing, except they were more violent. They use dark magic regularly, and nearly all of them would go on to be Death Eaters. Even in he Snape's Worst Memory scene, James is humiliating Snape for sure, but he's also not really hurting him. Snape's response is to shoot a cutting spell at James's face. Mind you, that's before the infamous moment where James levitate him upside-down. Snape's response to teasing and a tripping jinx was to use potentially lethal magic, and James's response to being attacked with potentially lethal magic is to dangle him from his ankles so his robes fall over his head.
Then Snape goes on to be a Death Eater, which on its own is worse than anything James ever did. Then he willingly tells Voldemort the Prophecy, knowing it could be able Harry, because he thinks that if Voldemort kills James and Harry he can have Lily for himself. That is straight up evil. He doesn't go to Dumbledore out of the goodness of his heart. He goes to Dumbledore because he knows Voldemort is going to kill Lily. He doesn't care about the 1 year old baby.
Then as a teacher, he's strait up cruel to his students. And not just Harry. For as inappropriate and misguided as that is, at least he has some reason for it. The way he treats other students, like Hermione and Neville, is inexcusable. He attempts to poison Neville's pet in front of the classroom, and when it doesn't work he punishes then for making the potion right. That's insane behavior, and it's deliberately left out of the movie to make Snape a more sympathetic character. I have my reservations about the TV show, and especially with Snape's character, but if they can actually show how awful he is that would be a huge step up. Alan Rickman was great, but the character he portrayed wasn't really Snape.
