A few incoming PhD students have asked me what they can do now to prepare for grad school. Here’s my advice - don’t refresh on stats or or try to get a head start on research. Instead, do absolutely nothing! Sleep until noon, spend time with loved ones, & binge watch trashy tv!
I don’t give a rat’s hairy ass how many publications or grants someone has.
Do you treat your students and colleagues with RESPECT and KINDNESS?! Because that’s what I care about.
@nelsonlflores https://t.co/Y471mSUTdQ I also think the "living wage" language lacks detail. Many grad workers use this site to back up their slogans with more specific money math.
@nelsonlflores As a grad labor organizer, I think EVERY worker (not just people with PhDs) deserves a living wage. Most (not all) grads I know feel that way too. When they say "nobody can live" they mean no one should have to. The grads complaining are "living" on those stipends now.
It's common advice to new PhD students to treat it like a job, ie setting some regular hours/boundaries for how you work. I'd like to encourage you to think of it as a job, in that you are performing work in exchange for money.
Academia has really really weird ideas about money
Please sign & circulate this letter written by graduate workers & faculty calling on @IllinoisStateU, Pres. Kinzy & the BOT, to do the right thing, to follow the IL Dept. of Public Health, the IL Board of Higher Ed, & the Centers for Disease Control in mandating vaccines!
Last Thursday my dad told me he doesn’t want to get to know my girlfriend or us as a couple and when I got upset and told him how hurtful that was, he said he didn’t want to know the “physical, intimate details” of our relationship
one time lauren berlant gave me some advice about affective survival in toxic institutions:
"if you're going to be very fierce, you might also want to be very warm."
and… i try, honestly i try.
UIUC announced last night that it will discontinue its use of Proctorio, the invasive and discriminatory remote proctoring software, after Summer 2021! This is a win for our members and our students, who have been organizing on this issue for months! https://t.co/2aeLTZxgee
