Why I decided in the late 90’s not to make deals in tourneys:

It really came down to not wanting to hurt people’s feelings by only chopping with people who’s game I respected.

If I chop with Bob because he is good, and then next week my friend Jim asks to chop but he isn’t very good and I say no, he may say “But you chopped with Bob last week. Why wouldn’t you chop with me?”

If I chop with Jim I’m taking the worst of it. I’m a favorite to beat Jim. If I tell the truth, Jim might think I’m an asshole.

So to avoid taking the worst of it and also keeping things on the tour friendly with my competitors, I made it a policy to never chop.

This way, no one should feel slighted and I avoid uncomfortable conversations with people I may really like, but also don’t think play very well.
