If your story (or game) has animal characters, two-legged or not, and you're not at least trying to lean into some of the traits and tropes that those beasts symbolize (across millennia of culture I should add,) then what's even the point?
For aesthetic only? I can sort of understand that argument, which was explained to me by an art professor. Humans are almost instinctively drawn to animal characters because they're inherently more interesting (i.e. we have "human fatigue," being surrounded by people day and night, and anything to break that monotony is welcome.)
But if your beastly fellows are acting in a way that makes them indistinguishable from humans because you're trying to "subvert" these tropes, or even worse avoid accusations of "bioessentialism" (barf,) then I'm afraid that you're painfully misguided.
I don't mind characters that occasionally play against type. Sometimes they can be delightful surprises. The friendly dragon, the noble and just wolf, the resourceful and generous rat, and so on. These stories do exist, have existed, and are popular for a reason.
But if you're trying to stick it to thousands of years of tradition for some kind of shallow, trite, political conceit... if you're offended by the sly fox, the trickster monkey, the noble lion, the timid mouse, and the deceitful serpent... then you should probably re-think your life.

@litteralyme0@AlexJohnsonArt It frustrates me that movies are being made about the special units in WWII that inspired James Bond, and none of them mention Lee. He WAS the man that was the inspiration for Bond. And yet Hollywood refuses to name or recognize him
